The 2011 Formula 1 season kicked off last weekend with defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull taking the chequered flag at the Australian GP in Albert Park, Melbourne. According to ESPN STAR Sports, Vettel’s victory was witnessed live by more than 542,000 Malaysians courtesy of their live broadcast.

Compared to last year’s Aussie GP, viewership trend of the 2011 edition saw a huge increase in male viewers – a 30% jump in male cable viewers aged 15 and above. Next weekend, the action comes to our backyard, with the Sepang International Circuit slated to once again host the Malaysian GP.

This year marks the 20th year ESPN STAR Sports is broadcasting the Formula One. Supported by broadcast sponsor Petronas, STAR Sports will have the pre and post-race programmes Race Day and Chequered Flag, hosted by Steve Dawson with ex-F1 driver Alex Yoong. The race commentary team will feature the voices of Steve Slater and Gary Anderson, former Jordan Grand Prix chief designer and technical director.

Those looking for a clearer picture of the action can opt for High-Definition broadcast via ESPN HD, while ESPN Player allows fans the opportunity to view races anywhere at anytime.
