Cumulative sales of Toyota hybrids hit 3M units globally

In Sept 2009, we ran a story telling you that Toyota and Lexus have sold a combined two million units of hybrid vehicles worldwide since launching the Toyota Coaster Hybrid in 1997. In the one and a half years that elapsed, Toyota has since put another one million hybrid vehicles to the road, crossing the three-million mark in February 2011.

As of 28 February 2011, the cumulative total of Toyota & Lexus hybrid vehicles sold stood at 3.03 million units worldwide. Toyota Motor Corporation, TMC, currently has a line-up of some 16 hybrid vehicles marketed in 80 countries. By 2012, a further six all-new models will be added to that tally, and four of the existing models will receive a revamp.

Recently launched worldwide was the Lexus CT 200h, which arrived in Malaysian shores only last month. Exemptions on import and excise duties by the government has allowed local Toyota and Lexus distributor, UMW Toyota Motor, to attractively price the CT 200h below the RM200k mark before insurance.

UMWT’s other hybrid model in Malaysia, the Toyota Prius, similarly benefited from the newly introduced tax breaks; its price dropped from RM175,000 during launch to RM139,900 with insurance effective October 2010.
