Hyundai shows off new identity in Geneva

by -

Hyundai’s contribution to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show adds up to the global debut for one car, European debut for two cars, and the unveiling, for Europe at least, a new brand identity. Taking centre stage is the i40, a Euro-specific D-segment model slightly smaller than the Sonata making its world debut in wagon form.

Accompanying the i40 are the Veloster three-door coupe and the Curb Urban Activity Vehicle (UAV) concept, both making their European premieres. Additionally, the Geneva show also marks the official European launch of Hyundai’s new brand motto – New Thinking. New Possibilities – which was announced earlier this year in Detroit.

Hyundai claims that the i40 embodies its new ‘modern premium’ philosophy, which makes premium quality accessible to the masses at affordable prices. To start with, the i40 will come loaded with features such as heating and folding rear seats, auto-demister and heated steering wheel.

Powertrain options include a 1.7-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines. The diesel is claimed to give out only 113 grams of CO2 per 100 kilometres traveled. The standard Five Year Triple Care package, which gives unlimited-mileage warranty, roadside assistance and vehicle inspection during the period, ensures peace of mind ownership.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Coupe’s successor, the Veloster, makes its European bow here showing off a 1.6-litre GDI engine mated with Hyundai’s first six-speed double clutch transmission. Also making its first appearance in the Continent is the Curb concept, which will serve as a test bed for Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics technology (think iDrive and MMI).

Other attractions at Hyundai’s Geneva stand are various new products developed under its Blue Drive sub-brand for environmentally friendly vehicles, one of them being the ix35 FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle), which is capable of covering up to 650km in one full charge. Also on display is the fully in-house developed Sonata HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and the BlueOn which is features a 16.4 kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery providing juice for a 82hp/210Nm electric motor.
