Land Rover Malaysia kicks off 2011 with new Freelander 2 SD4
The Land Rover Freelander 2 has been given a mid-life product facelift to kick start the company’s influx of new models this year. The new Freelander 2 SD4 follows the introduction of Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 and the Defender 110 Double Cab pick-up late last year.
From this point forward, the company will also make a clearer distinction in marketing the Land Rover models from its more illustrious Range Rover siblings, which comprises of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, and soon to be joined by the Range Rover Evoque later this year.
Sold at unchanged prices of RM271,388 (Peninsula Malaysia) and RM274,888 (East Malaysia) before insurance, the new Freelander 2 SD4 carries an uprated version of the 2,179cc Ford-PSA Group DW12 turbodiesel engine. In its current iteration, the 2.2-litre oil burner produces 187hp @ 3,500rpm and has 420Nm worth of twist available at 1,750rpm.
Minor styling changes have been put in place, and the keen eye should spot a more Range Rover-like front grille with Titan finish, re-profiled bumpers, re-design head- and tail-lights and revised fog lamp bezels. Certain previously unpainted parts are now body-coloured, and 19″ alloys complete the new look.
Boosting the Freelander 2’s off-roading credentials is its Terrain Response system, which helps to adapt the responses of the vehicle’s engine, gearbox, centre coupling and chassis systems to match terrain demands. Additionally, Terrain Response also functions to govern the various driving aids such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Corner Brake Control (CBC), Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Hill Descent Control (HDC).
