BMW Malaysia announces strong performance for 2010
BMW Group Malaysia today announced record performances in 2010 for all of its business units – BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad. From a total of 3,990 in 2009, the three business units combined to deliver a grand total of 4,509 vehicles sold for 2010.
Majority of vehicles sold were BMW cars, which accounted for 4,006 vehicles. MINI and BMW Motorrad accounted for 222 and 281 vehicles respectively. Breakdown of the previous year’s sales were 3,564 BMW cars, 201 MINI and 225 Motorrad.
Announcing the performance result, Mr. Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director, BMW Group Malaysia said, “The year 2010 proved to be yet another historic milestone for us where we managed to set successful benchmarks in all areas of business. With the the Malaysian automotive sector growing significantly to a Total Industry Volume (TIV) amounting to 598,200 units, the most ever achieved and surpassing the previous record of 552,316 units achieved back in 2005, all signs seem to point towards a positive recovery from the 2009 economic downturn.”
It was indeed a busy year at BMW Malaysia’s HQ in Cyberjaya. The company had bolstered its product range with the all-new F10 5 Series, the X1, the facelifted X5, the BMW S 1000 RR superbike and a new MINI Cooper range. Local assembly also commenced for the 523i, 528i and both variants of the X1 in Kulim, Kedah. In addition, the company also enjoyed record performances for the 3 Series and 7 Series.
“In 2010, we introduced a product portfolio which demonstrated why we are the most dynamic automaker in the premium segment of the Malaysian car industry. We introduced leading, cutting edge technology for cars in the segment and we introduced the new locally assembled BMW X1 model, a first new BMW model series to be assembled here in 27 years. These strategic initiatives drove our performance for the year and moving forward, we fully intend to continue to deliver on our strategy of delivering the full range of BMW vehicles to Malaysia as soon as they are made available. We are also studying the viability of introducing additional locally assembled models series here in Malaysia.” said Briscoe.
In addition to new models, the sales network was expanded with the opening of four new dealerships in Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan, Butterworth and Johor Bahru, bringing the total number of BMW dealerships nationwide to 15. Showroom events were held round the calendar year to entice customer visit to dealerships.
