Remember the movie Evolusi KL Drift? The one featuring scenes of cars smoking tyres and making doughnuts right in the heart of town at Dataran Merdeka. Well, those images are set to come out in real life on 18-19 December, with the Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia 2010 set to take place at that very same venue.

The inaugural edition, held last year at the Malaysian Agricultural Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), attracted a crowd of 12,000 spectators. With a venue placed right in the heart of town, this year’s edition looks set to attract an even bigger crowd.

Organizers are expecting the participation of some 50 drifters from around the Asia-Pacific region. While title sponsor Goodyear will be sending in number of notable drifters such as Ariff Johanis, Jane Cheah, Michael Gan, and Hanizam Hamzah, local eyes will be on the efforts of Tengku Djan battling to defend the title he won last year.

“We are thrilled to stage another spectacular Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia event after such a hugely successful showing last year. The high calibre of world-class drivers is testament to the elite level of competition and we’re excited to bring the event closer to spectators at Dataran Merdeka,” said Harvey Davis, Vice President, Event Management Group, ESPN STAR Sports.

A launch press conference for the event was held earlier today at KL City Hall (DBKL) headquarters, where we were shown the layout of a very tight and technical track. Close proximity to the historical Sultan Abdul Samad Building promises not only spectacular photography but also heart-stopping moments as drivers will need to deal with some pretty narrow margins when they kick the tails of their cars out.

The Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia will be the climax of the three-part Formula Drift Series, which blasted off with the Formula Drift Singapore ProAm Series 2010 in April, followed by the upcoming Goodyear Formula Drift Thailand on November 20 – 21, to be held in Bangkok.
