Next-gen Mercedes-Benz CLS to go on sale Jan 2011
Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce its second-generation CLS four-door coupe in the upcoming Paris Motor Show, and have just announced the pricing and variants for the new model set to go on sale in Europe come January 2011. Two V6 engines will kick-start offerings followed by a diesel four-banger and a petrol-powered V8 at later dates.
The CLS’ opening gambit will start with the diesel-powered CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the petrol-powered CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. The diesel model develops 260hp from its 2,987cc displacement, whilst the petrol model makes 306hp out of 3,498cc. Although featuring direct injection, the petrol variant does not carry CGI badging. Both power figures are up from the equivalent E-Class models – the E 350 CDI is rated at 231hp while the E 350 CGI is good for 288hp.
Two months later, a new entry level model will enter the fray in the form of the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. Powering it is the highly-acclaimed 2,143cc four-cylinder turbodiesel engine which produces 204hp / 500Nm while still consuming only 5.1 litres/100km in European test cycles. Finally, the V8-powered flagship CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY will start finding homes in April 2011.
A myriad of (very pricey) options will be available for the CLS, and this includes active parking assist (€868.70), LED high-performance headlamps (€1,773.10), and Driving Assistance package Plus which bundles in Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS, BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brakes for a not inconsiderable €2,677.50.
