Porsche Carrera Cup action to resume in Beijing
In conjunction with the upcoming Fascination Porsche weekend on 21 – 23 May at Beijing, the 2.4km-long Goldenport International Circuit will be hosting Rounds 3 & 4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2010 season. This weekend’s rounds of races will see the record 23-strong field battle it out over two races of 25 laps each.
The Fascination Porsche event itself includes a range of activities for Porsche owners and enthusiasts, which would include short courses on sports car handling, and the opportunity to go on a ‘hot lap’ on the Goldenport track with the racing drivers and instructors.
There will also be a display of vintage Porsche cars, specially flown into Beijing from Porsche’s museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Cars that fans can look forward to include the 550 Spyder, 904/8, 917 Langheck, and 959.
On the track, meanwhile, reigning champion Christian Menzel of Chinese Team StarChase will look to build on his back-to-back wins in the opening rounds held at Shanghai last month.
Looking to challenge Menzel will be the likes of Craig Baird (PCS Racing), and Keita Sawa standing in for Darryl O’Young in the LKM Racing Team. O’Young’s participation in this round is curtailed by his commitments to the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
Red Bull Racing’s Marchy Lee will be looking to bounce back from a poor showing in the opening round, having spun wide and puncturing a tyre in Round 2. Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen, who suffered clutch problems in Round 2, will be similarly looking to improve his fortunes.
In Class B, an intense three-way battle is anticipated beetween Mok Weng Sun (Team PCS Racing), Ringo Chong (Team Kangshun), and Francis Tjia (OpenRoad Racing). Mok currently leads the standings of Class B, but Chong and Tjia are close behind being tied for 2nd place.
Mr. Helmut Broeker, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche (China) Motors Ltd., said, “Coming to Beijing for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia weekend is always an unforgettable occasion, and this year will be no different. The drivers and Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Cars seem to continually raise their standards of performance with every new season. It’s also a great opportunity for Porsche to share something of our proud racing heritage, providing further evidence of our strong commitment to promoting the excitement of motorsports across China as a whole.”
Rounds 3 and 4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be held on Sunday, 23 May.
