New Records Set at MPT Super Time Attack 2009 Final
With support from Official Lubricant Lucas Oil by Works Engineering, the third and final round of MPT Super Time Attack 2009 was held on 28 November 2009 at the Sepang International Circuit. Despite the seasonal rain that poured at the start of the session, new records were set as fastest timings were clocked. Desmond Soh of ST Powered proved invincible as he emerged fastest man of the year with the best time of MPT Super Time Attack 2009 – 2 minutes 15.593 seconds.
Repeat participants who were previously affected by rain brought a spare set of rain tyres in anticipation of wet weather. Hence, the rain did not stop these participants from going out on the track, except for some like MPT Super Time Attack Round 3 winner Soh who only brought full slick tyres. In simpler terms, he will not head out onto the track unless the track dries up.
Fortunately the rain ceased shortly and the skies cleared as all the participants got on the track as the practice session commenced. Coming into the final round, the time to beat was that of Eddie Ng from Choon’s Motor who clocked the Fastest Time of the Day (FTD) of 2 minutes 18.799 seconds during MPT Super Time Attack Round 1.
Timings were looking good during practice as Ng clocked 2 minutes 18.540 seconds whilst Soh clocked 2 minutes 20.130 seconds. However, other ill-fated participants like Aloysius Lek had to end his race early due to overheating in his Honda Civic Type R.
After the practice session ended, the official time trials begun. Favourites Ng and Soh did not disappoint as both of them went on to set new records. Soh set a new Personal Best during Class 1A (4-wheel-drive with no restrictions to engine capacity) with a hot lap time of 2 minutes 15.593 seconds in his Subaru Impreza WRX, beating his existing best time of 2 minutes 15.690 seconds which was set last year.
Ng also bettered himself with a time of 2 minutes 16.390 seconds, breaking his personal best that was set during round 1 of MPT Super Time Attack 2009, a timing of 2 minutes 18.799 seconds, in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, though was ousted of the running for FTD and subsequently Fastest Time of The Year.
In the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X (Evo X) one-make class, it was Tan Jian Wen who emerged tops with his time of 2 minutes 38.239 minutes. His outstanding performance resulted in a promotion from Clubman status to Graded. Kuvesh Pather was second after Tan with a time of 2 minutes 40.422 seconds.
Both Soh’s and Michel’s Subaru WRXes faced issues later and was unable to race in the Open Category where entries were not restricted to any modifications. This gave Ng a good chance and he delivered the expectation with a time of 2 minutes 16.656 seconds.
In what can be called the Turbocharged vs. Naturally-Aspirated category, Luke Netto dominated it with his Honda Integra Type-R on semi-slicks as he clocked a winning time of 2 minutes 32.669 seconds.
