SX4 Sedan Introduced By Suzuki Malaysia Automobile
Petaling Jaya, 24 July 2008 – The very competitive compact sedan market segment just got a whiff of excitement today with the introduction of the Suzuki SX4 Sedan by Suzuki Malaysia Automobile Sdn Bhd. Fully imported from Japan, the Suzuki SX4 is a variant of the SX4 Cross-Over hatchback introduced by Suzuki Malaysia Automobile earlier.
Created by the same Suzuki design team that developed the widely popular Suzuki Swift, the SX4 Sedan is pitted against the likes of the Toyota Vios and the Honda City. The difference is that the SX4, other than the fact that it is built in Japan and shipped here in one piece, is that it has a 1.6 litre DOHC engine that features variable valve and ignition timing, putting it on par with its competitors. Power output is 101 hp at 5,600 rpm, and maximum torque is a healthy 140Nm at 4,000 rpm.
The SX4 is equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission that has 1:1 drive ratio in third gear and an overdrive ratio of 0.697:1 in fourth gear. Coupled to a 4.375 final drive ratio and fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels fitted with 195/65 R 15 tyres, the SX4 promises a good balance between good acceleration and fuel economy. A change to 55 or 50 Series tyres would immediately lower the overall drive ratio for those who wish for better get-up-and-go.
Insofar as equipment and standard accessories that are included in the selling price, the SX4 does come pleasantly loaded, making it a great value proposition for the buyer. Dual SRS airbags, ABS, and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), with BA (Brake Assist) are part of the standard package at no extra charge. For in-car entertainment, there is a radio, MP3/WMA Cd player, complete with steering wheel audio controls which control the output via an 8-speaker system. As an added bonus, the buyer gets an Auto Climate Control air-conditioner system normally associated with more expensive cars, an alarm system with immobilizer, reverse sensors, carpet mats. Families with small children will also appreciate the fact that the SX4 is equipped with a child seat anchorage point.
Optional accessories include Suzuki window tinting, a trunk lid mini spoiler, door visors (strangely), and leather seats under a ‘Premier Package’.
In keeping with the current trend of ‘growing’ vehicles, the design engineers have diligently worked at maximising the size and interior space; giving the SX4 a higher stance, giving the SX4 sedan the roominess of a mini MPV, remembering that this is a close cousin of the SX4 Crossover unit. The same design philosophy is incorporated into the boot design, which has a generous capacity of 515 litres.
Front Macpherson struts work with a rear torsion beam set-up; this is in keeping with sedans in its category, but of course with the input of the very same design engineers that dialed in the superb ride and handling characteristics of the Swift.
The SX4 Sedan in standard trim retails at RM88,888, while the ‘Premier Package’ retails at RM93,888. Keep your eyes on this site for our first drive impressions.
