SIME launches two new tyres : ASTAR 100 AND ASTAR 300
Kuala Lumpur, 20 September 2005: Continental Sime Tyre Marketing Sdn Bhd today launched its Sime Tyres’ new passenger car tyres, the Astar 100 and Astar 300 at the Bukit Tinggi Resort. The launch was officiated by Mr. Choong Kee Seng, Sales Director of Continental Sime Tyre Marketing Sdn Bhd. Press members were invited to drive Proton Gen.2’s and Hyundai Getz’s fitted with these tyres up to the resort to try them out.
The new Sime Tyres Astar 100 – For Comfort and Durability
The Astar 100 is basically a comfort tyre that features a smooth harmonic design and computer-designed shift pattern that provide a very quiet and comfortable ride. Under heavy rain conditions, drainage grooves, which extend to the centre of the tread, ensure that water is channeled out of the ground contact patch, an aspect that minimizes the danger of aquaplaning. Exceptionally deep, wide tread grooves provide sufficient space for displacing water at higher speeds.
Gripping edges provide additional road holding and ensure good tracking on wet and dry roads, as well as on partly surfaced tracks. Sturdy shoulder lugs, which are also able to handle extreme loads, provide good track holding and precise steering response.
Due to this innovative design concept and its sophisticated arrangement of grooves and sipes, the positive characteristics of both tread pattern elements are able to work well together.
The new Astar 100 also more than satisfies other safety requirements, such as short braking distances, due to the innovative double sipe concept. The sipe concept is actually a groove within a groove, aimed at reducing tread movement during stress moments, thereby providing better braking stability and lane stability through providing stiffer block structures.
The new Astar 100 also boasts of a flatter contour that ensures even load distribution. This in turn means even tyre wear and a longer service life.

The new Sime Tyres Astar 300 – for performance and larger cars
The Astar 300 is a uni-directional tyre with a V-shaped tread pattern that offers high levels of precision control and safety on wet or dry surfaces, while a wide circumferential centre rib ensures optimum handling and response – in even the most demanding of driving conditions.
One of the design objectives, other than providing excellent handling characteristics, is to provide a quiet and comfortable ride. This is achieved through using a computer-designed pattern shift without compromising on performance.
The new advanced construction of the Astar 300, combined with its wide circumferential and lateral grooves in the tread area, delivers increased water displacement to ensure maximum performance and safety.
The tyre sizes with an aspect ratio of 55 series and below features a rim protection rib against sidewall and rim being scuffled by the curb.

The two tyres are manufactured locally at the Sime Tyres plant in Alor Setar, and are fully backed by Continental Sime Tyres and all the German technology that comes along with it.
In our short test drive, we found both to be good; the road conditions were dry, so we really did not have any opportunity to do any wet testing. Suffice to say, the Astar 100 and Astar 300 are pretty good packages. You get the benefits of the latest technologies from Europe, and pay a substantially low price.
