Security Update for Touch ‘n Go cards
Beginning 18 August 2005, all Touch ‘n Go users are required to update their cards for better security features and to register their details.
Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd (RSSB), the operator of Touch ‘n Go card and SmartTAG, will be launching a campaign tomorrow entitled, The Winning Touch that encompasses mandatory Touch ‘n Go security update, user registration exercise and a contest that offers attractive prizes.
The campaign will run from 18 August to 8 December 2005, of which all Touch ‘n Go users who update and register their card within this period, including new card purchases, will stand a chance to win 42’ LG Plasma TV every week and a Volvo S40 at the end of the campaign.
According to RSSB Chief Operating Officer Swinder Grewal, the campaign has three main objectives:
1.To enhance the security features of all Touch ‘n Go cards
2.To introduce card ownership registration process
3.To add value to Touch ‘n Go services, by providing e-statement facility etc
During this period, all Touch ‘n Go cards, including Touch ‘n Go Zing Auto Reload Card, Touch ‘n Go Hybrid Auto Reload Card, MyKad with activated Touch ‘n Go feature, and Co-branded card, like the Singapore Cash Card, Touch ‘n Go Ferrari Card etc, are required to be updated before 8 December.
Swinder said, “the security update is to keep abreast with the latest smartcard security feature in the industry and to maintain Touch ‘n Go system integrity so that the electronic cash converted by users, which is stored in the smartcard chip, is better protected against potential fraudulent transactions”.
The update involves changing the security key of the smartcard chip embedded in the Touch ‘n Go card to the newer version. Touch ‘n Go is locally developed to Mifare standard, the international de-facto standard for contactless smartcard.
She said, “Due to this high standard, Touch ‘n Go security feature has not been compromised in the past. But as new technology is made available, whilst the current security key of all Touch ‘n Go cards is dated back in 1997, it is time to update the card to maintain fraud-free status and to continue providing quality services to all our users.”
Touch ‘n Go card security update is mandatory, failing which, card will not be able to function after the deadline.
For updating purposes, all users are required to bring their cards to any Touch ‘n Go counters.
As for user registration, RSSB would like to call upon all Touch ‘n Go users who have not registered or updated their details, to do so beginning tomorrow.
With this exercise, in the case of stolen or lost cards, details of card owners will enable RSSB to refund the money left in the card to the owners. In addition, RSSB will also be giving free e-statements, an itemised on-line Touch ‘n Go transaction statement, for users to monitor card usage.
Swinder said “the benefits offered under this registration process are only the beginning, RSSB will reward registered customer for their loyalty with many more value-added services in the future”.
Cardholders need to fill in a registration form or call Touch ‘n Go Careline Centre. This is applicable also to MyKad and auto reload cardholders. Even though RSSB may have the information from Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara or the participating banks that offer auto reload services, the database might not be updated because users’ contact details are subjected to change.
“Users can rest assured that all information registered with us are strictly confidential and will not be sold for commercial purposes. We are under Bank Negara’s regulation and information privacy of our users are very important,” Swinder added.
During this campaign period, users who update, register or purchase new Touch ‘n Go card will automatically qualify for The Winning Touch lucky draw contest. The contest does not require a slogan or an entry form. Every RM10 reloaded will entitle the user to one entry. For example, RM100 reload will entitle users to 10 entries. Winners are selected by computerized balloting systems and will be announced in major newspapers and Touch ‘n Go website on a monthly basis.
Swinder said, “this is our way of saying thank you to our customers for their support. Most importantly, we recognise the inconvenience caused for customers to update and register their card and that is why we try to compensate them with a contest that offer attractive prizes.”
For card security update, purchase, and user registration, customers can visit more than 100 Touch ‘n Go counters located at all highway toll plazas and selected Petronas stations. Card update can also be done at drive-through “Tambah Nilai” lanes. In addition, RSSB will also open mobile counters at major shopping complexes, selected Petronas stations and highway rest areas.
