BFGoodrich Asian Motorsports Festival AAM Malaysian Autokhana Championship – Round 2, Selangor.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED!!!

The BFGoodrich Asian Motorsports Festival Autokhana Qualifying (Selangor) Round 2 was a great success, with over 40 participants taking part, and more than 500 spectators who braved the heat to witness the action.

In total the participants endured almost eight hours of competition at the Shah Alam Stadium car park, at temperatures hovering around the mid-thirties. Competitors from as far away as Penang made the trip down to Shah Alam for this, the final qualifying round for the AMF Autokhana Championship. This round was also to select top drivers to represent Malaysia at the BFGoodrich AMF Festival Finals in December.

The action was not without a few hiccups. Ian Khong, one of the best drivers in Malaysia, drove brilliantly in the first test, only to find his Suzuki Swift GTI’s wiring short circuited before the final heat. “I don’t know what happened. Suddenly the car just didn’t want to start, and we saw some wiring ripped apart. It looked like it fell on the fan belt.” Said Ian.

It was Ian’s lucky day, when a fellow competitor in the same class, a total stranger, offered Ian the use of his car for the remaining test. This was a show of sportsmanship at its best. Ken Choong Yew Kweng loaned Ian his Proton Satria to complete the event, knowing full well that if Ian could not complete the course, he would be disqualified, and that would have improved his (Ken’s) chances of winning. Well done Ken Choong, we salute you! This enabled Ian to complete the Autokhana, and finish, yet again, 1st in Class B. A jubilant Ian said after the race that he and Ken are now the best of buddies.

Kelly Tan, the only female participant in the previous AMF Autokhana in Penang made a trip down to KL especially for this event, and this time, everybody noticed a marked improvement in her driving. Whilst she did not win, her spirit and enthusiasm never waned and that was very admirable. This time though, Kelly was not the only lady driver taking part. Kiren Kaur, sister of participant Jagjeet Singh, and daughter of a veteran driving ace, Pardaman Singh decided to enter the competition. Pardaman was seen at the scene, giving moral support and advice to his two kids.

Sharing her Proton Wira 1.5 with her brother, Kiren did not make it to a podium finish, but her times in Class C were good enough to ensure that she did not finish last in that class. For their spirit of enthusiasm and as a gesture for having the courage to take on the guys, both Kelly and Kiren were awarded a special prize, courtesy of BFGoodrich.

At the end of the day, the weary participants awaited the final call. This was the call they had been waiting for all day, the Championship Positions FINAL list, and the crowning of the AMF Autokhana Champion. This list would dictate who would be representing Malaysia at the BFGoodrich AMF Autokhana Finals in December.

Julian Pang, who had driven exceptionally well in the Penang round of the Autokhana, held the flag high for the island state of Penang yet again to emerge the overall BFGoodrich AMF Autokhana Champion with a total of 234.990 points, narrowly beating out Rohasreen Hassan from Ipoh, who was first runner-up with 235.290 points, three hundredths of a second behind. Less than a second behind Rohasreen was Ian Khong, with a total of 236.240 points, in third overall.
