New Mazda Roadster Coupe
The long-awaited Mazda Roadster Coupe has now made its appearance in Japan, extending the popular Roadster range. This is perhaps the last significant variation before the new model comes in 2005 (a sneak preview of the successor is expected to appear at the coming Tokyo Motorshow).
Production of this variant was achieved with technologies developed by Mazda Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd, the Mazda-owned subsidiary which specializes in technologies for the development of limited production models.
The 2-seat Roadster Coupe further advances on the design of its base model. Hand-modeling and the latest CAD technology were employed in the process to create a semi-classic feel that combines sporty and dynamic features with functional styling.
During development of the vehicle’s closed body, engineers revised the body structure in order to enhance body rigidity. This was achieved with a total weight increase of only ten kgs. These improvements further advance on the fun to drive qualities of the original Roadster.
There are two engine choices – 1.6 litres (125 ps) and 1.8 litres (154 ps ~ 160 ps) – in three different packages and four grades. The Roadster Coupe is the only domestically-produced rear-wheel drive coupe with an engine size less than two litres.
In Japan, ex-factory prices start at the equivalent of RM81,500 and go up to RM107,510.
