Proton Edar Sdn. Bhd. (PE) supports the Women in Motorsport Racing Team programme, which kicked off a few weeks back with several official practice sessions being held prior to the coming Merdeka Millennium Endurance, scheduled on 30 and 31 August 2003.

The team comprising, Deanna Yusoff, Maya Karin, Philippa Yoong and Maznah Zulkifli, is the first all-female team for the event in Malaysia. They will use a Proton Satria GTI for the race.

“Motorsports has great potential and should be exposed for positive influence it can impose to all Malaysians. By sponsoring the Women in Motorsport team, we hope to ignite the passion of motorsports amongst Malaysian women,” says Datuk Maruan Mohd. Said, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar.

Of the four racers, Philippa Yoong, better known in water-skiing circles, would be the one most familiar with racing cars, coming from a family of racers. Her brother is F1 driver Alex Yoong while her mother, Joanna Yoong also did a short stint of racing in the 1980s (in a JPS-BMW) and her father was also a racing driver during that decade.
