Design a Future Model for Peugeot

Peugeot is presently running its second International Peugeot Design Competition which is open to anyone 14 years of age or older and from any profession other than those in the auto industry. The competition is unique in that it is conducted entirely via the Internet; all designs must be submitted by this channel.

The theme for the competition is a retro-futuristic Peugeot vehicle and the design must be one which the company can make in future, if it wants to do so. According to Philippe Houy, Peugeot’s product management concept car project leader, ‘retro-futuristic’ was the chosen theme because ‘we want to give participants the opportunity to draw inspiration from previous Peugeot models in order to produce a model for the future’.

“The participants can draw inspiration from all the Peugeot models produced past and present, and base their design on a model which actually existed or make use of certain details such as the radiator, grille, lights, specific shapes, etc,” he explains.

“We give free rein to the creativity and talent of participants from around the world to dream up a project which reflects the Peugeot heritage. There can be a mixture of types, generations, alliances of futuristic concepts with strong references to the past… anything is possible!” he adds.

As with the competition in 2001 which saw the winning entry (out of over 2,000 received from nearly 80 countries) of a Yugoslav design student being constructed into a full-scale model, the winning design in this second competition will also be constructed and displayed at the 2003 Frankfurt Motorshow.

Judging will also be unique as the jury will consist of Peugeot representatives, members of Peugeot’s design team and journalists from design magazines and internet surfers who will be invited to vote on-line. The selection criteria will include the creativity and originality of the submission, its consistency with or relevance to the subject, as well as accompanying explanations and the quality of the final product.

The competition, which has no entry fees, officially commenced on September 28 2002 and entries can be submitted until midnight of December 12 2002. At the end of December, 50 entries will be selected for a preliminary round which will be put to the vote of internet surfers and the press.

In January 2003, 10 entries of the 50 selected will reach the final round and be shown together on the website prior to a meeting of the final jury in February. By March, the winner will be announced at the Geneva Motorshow. Following this, Peugeot personnel will construct a full-scale model which will be ready by September for display at Frankfurt.

For the winner, having his or her idea turned into a 3-dimensional model would be the biggest reward and additionally, there is a prize of 5,000 Euros in cash (about RM18,850), plus a Peugeot watch and a Peugeot concept cars DVD. The first prize will include an invitation for two people to attend the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show for two days, including travel expenses and full-board in a 3-star hotel. Each of the 9 runners-up from stage 2 will get 1,000 Euros (RM3,770) in cash, a Peugeot watch and a Peugeot concept cars DVD, while the 50 runners-up selected in stage 1 will get a Peugeot watch worth €42.55 (RM160).
