2000 and 2001 were years of new product launches for Ford Malaysia and saw the local line-up completely refreshed. Now, after that string of launches, 2002 is a year of consolidation and while no new models are to be introduced, the company is still keeping interest high in its present models by offering special editions and promotions like the 3.0% interest rate for loans.

While one of its dealer chains (Ford Concessionaires) recently took the initiative to develop its own special edition of the Escape, Ford Malaysia itself has come up with a special version of the Ford Lynx Sedan which it has dubbed ‘SV’.

Fast Ford fans will recognize ‘SV’ as standing for ‘Special Vehicle’ and in some countries like UK and the USA, Ford has a special division to produce ‘SVs’ of production models.

While ‘SV’ usually means a hotter version, the Lynx SV is essentially a dressed-up version of the standard Lynx with an exclusive metallic black colour and accessories with a matching colour. The headlamp units have a smoked finish while along the sides, the profile has a low-slung appearance with side skirts added below the door sills. the rear end also has a skirt and a spoiler attached to the edge of the bootlid. The rear lamps also have a different design.

The package includes special 15-inch 5-spoke polished alloy wheels which are shod with 195/55×15 tyres, the same as the standard Lynx sedans.

Inside, the difference for the SV is in the upholstery which is a classy velour material (instead of the leather in the Lynx LS) and colour-coordinated with the black exterior finish. The door trim panels also have the same material.

Mechanically, the SV is identical to the standard Lynx and has the same 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with sequential EFI. Power output is 80 kW/109 ps with 145 Nm of torque that is delivered either through a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission which features Direct Electronic Shift Control and programming that controls shifting on slopes.

In the safety department, the SV has a driver’s airbag and laminated windscreen glass, and the automatic also has ABS as standard.

Unlike the Escape Special Edition, the Lynx SV’s extras are not offered free and are part of the accessories pack for the car which is priced at RM10,542.57 for the SV automatic and RM9,342.69 for the SV manual. The price difference is due to the difference in the audio system (the automatic has a single CD player instead of a cassette player). It’s therefore more expensive that the standard versions (with metallic paint) and the differences are shown in the list below:

Ford Lynx XL manual: RM90,615.11 | Ford Lynx LS automatic: RM101,950.93
Ford Lynx SV manual: RM98,639,80 | Ford Lynx SV automatic: RM109,975.80

(prices inclusive of 100% comprehensive insurance, private registration)

With its mean black appearance, it seemed only appropriate to associate the Lynx SV with another ‘black event’ and that’s the movie ‘Men in Black II’. Ford Malaysia officially launched the car at the first showing of the movie at a popular cineplex recently, and it’s now available for viewing in Ford showrooms around the country.
