Exciting interior
The inside is no less exciting as the exterior: sweeping scalloped curves surround four bucket seats which are set low down and on either side of a prominent transmission tunnel. The two-tone interior has a mixture of black leather and a dark beige fabric while satin-finished aluminium highlights the dashboard.
An unusual ambient lighting concept is used which makes use of electro-luminous foil. This emits a soothing bluish light from the air vents under the dashboard and along the outlines of the door and side panels. The intensity is variable and adjusts according to the speed of the car.
The steering wheel design also incorporates the aluminium and leather theme with a short pistol-grip design for the gearlever that operates the 6-speed sequential transmission. An interesting idea is the mounting of the front airbags in the roof pillars, making it unnecessary to have a large centre pad for the steering wheel. Needless to say, being a Saab, safety standards are very high.
“The 9X shows where Saab is heading and is real, physical proof that we are embarked on an exciting journey,” declares Mauer. And during that journey, the company promises to unveil either a new concept model or a production model every year for the next six years.
