I'm looking to get this car but need some tips before I go shopping...
A 1.8 engine,
Is this car reliable?
Any major problems?

My wife drove one for about 16 months, 4/2002 to 8/2003, then changed to
an MPV due to an additional member in the family.
Until this day, my wife still loves the car dearly. Everytime we
encounter one on the road, she still blames me for selling the car. We
love the looks, cute and macho. The built is robust, CBU from Japan and
built for offroad. Big chunky tyres which practically goes anywhere.
The 1.8l engine is a bit anaemic as the car is pretty heavy, so the FC is
rather high too. The car is as reliable as anything else from the land of
the rising sun. But while we had it, we did change the a/c compressor as
it turned noisy.
On a couple of occasions where we went offroad with the low ratio
gearbox, we had a great time. This car is more than decent in muddy
The downside is that it is not very spacious.

regularly driving the car as due to it's size it's so much more fun & convenient driving one
through KL traffic & in tight parking spaces... & if wanna make a 'detour' can always go over
those low level dividers... & if it rains heavily while on the road, just engage the 4WD on the
move for more traction.
One thing I like about this particular model we bought is that eventhough the exterior looks like
any other USF imported model, this particular model is actually a Japan based model, not an
export model that USF brought in. This model comes with sunroof, 2 airbags, ABS & it's a GDi
engine. I believe those that're found on the road is not GDi engine model. Lucky for us that the
used car dealer who sold us this car does not know the difference between a JDM & those
imported by USF.
All the original parts are very roburst as I only changed the timing belt, water pump & front
suspension when the mileage reads 150k... prior to that they were never changed by the first

brought in by USF and those by parallel importers (GDI engine). Exterior
wise, they are distinguishable by little details here and there, such as
the chrome grille, the rims and the bull bars. Interior wise, the trim
and the specs.
When we bought our unit, we wanted the factory warranty and therefore
went for the USF unit. Also, there were stories about the purity (or
lackof) of our fuel locally not suitable for the direct injection units,
But if tenchu has used the GDI unit for 150k km and have no problem with
our local fuel quality, then the concern might be unfounded. The GDI unit
is slightly more powerful too, I think.

whether our GDI model is more powerful or not as no way to test that yet... but I had no problem
driving up Genting with 6 ppl onboard (incl. driver) & full luggage. And for the past 2 years we've
owned the car, we have been regularly transporting up to 8 of our church's youth choir members
to practice on weekend nights... of course 2 of them have to squeeze in the rear bonnet lah
FYI, the GDI model also comes with a 'GDI ECO' indicator which lights up when we're driving in
