I am driving auto gear car. My question is should we shift to 'N' whenever
we stop at traffic light? Doing so will damage anything? Or will it safe
fuel comsuption? Any general guildlines now when to shift to 'N' and when
not to?

It is good practice to shift to N if stationary, P for parking.
Leaving it in "D" will cause the AT some stress

It depends on how long you will be waiting.
If only for a while, changing in and out of gear will be worse.

I think is depend what car...
if u shift D ur car is moving (u didn't press fuel paddle) then when u
stop, it is better to shift in N ... common sense will tell you if in D,
AT force the car move and u press the brake to stop it ... in long run
what will happend???

Well shift to N and use the handbrake.
Seen too many times adi that the driver shifted to N did not perform any
form of brake/hand brake.. the car slid back and for those lucky one the
driver for the vehicle behind start to horn.. those slow drivers end up
banging the car at the back!

haha, never seen any, this is too rare ....
btw, auto transmission's mechanism allows a few minutes of pressing-brake-
only-without-shifting-to-N instead of having to "P" or "N" + hand brake. P
with no handbrake or footbrake is *personally* strongly not recommended.

my kenari manual says to shift to N if stop for a while. and i am
observing that shifting to N saves fuel, instead of using brake and gear
in D4 while waiting at traffic light.

Perhaps the roads you normally travel does not have gentle slopes...
those cars do slide backwards so slow that the driver does not even feel
it.

When stationary in D, the AT will slip, and AT are made to slip, so no harm
done.
Frequent shifthing from D to N and vice versa will cause more wear and tear
on the shift mechanism.
But of course, if stationary for a long time, put into N. And I've seen
crazy ppl put it into P at traffic lights(you can know if the reverse
lights come on for a blink)
