dear all sifu, if i were to use the cheap "acrylic lacquer" spray method for the "invisible coating", was it safe? i saw need to wet sand using 1000 grit so that the paint can bond it well, but wouldn't it be too rough? also a bit worried on future whether can we sand out the coat layer?

would've try the method, but afraid of losing a pair of headlamp...

You still need to wet sand to remove the old surface, not only for bonding. As far as I know you need to use 2000 grit sandpaper for final finish.

This is what I did for friends head lights. Mine was finished with polishing no coating...

saw for coating method need rougher 800 or 1000 grit for coat to bond, after 3 layer dry then only do fine grit 2000 sanding, final with polish...

seems lengthy process, might need to wait for long raya holiday only i can start. might try on some plastic cd case to see the outcome 1st..

Oh! after coating still need to sand and polish....a lot of work

My friend use spar urethane, only wet sand, final is 2000 grit, clean and dry, but still will be hazy and blur, then just apply spar urthane over it and it will become clear. Let dry and you are done....

last saturday test on 1 plastic cd case.

wet sanding with 1000 grit, wash, then wipe with alcohol to ensure no oily residue. after dry spray the acrylic lacquer, but spray liao seems no difference also, still hazy causes of sanding. after 10 mins respray 2nd layer, still same no difference. wonder which process went wrong?

Maybe spar urethane works differently. My friend say wipe on the spar urethane and it becomes clear. However he finish with 2000 grit sand paper

But i saw on international forum, theirs also become clear once spray the lacquer, exactly same like the spar urethane.

saw spar urethance at ACE hardware shop, some 120-130 buck, beyond my "affordable diy" term edi.

Try finish with lighter sandpaper. Most headlight polish also recommend 2000 grit

Use 2K Clear after you have sanded. Can get in spray can from auto paint shop.
