Could you please help me determine which better Persona Elegance or Gen 2 in terms of reliability, capabilities, stability fuel consumption and finishing quality?

Thank you in advance for your help.

i believe there is no new proton Gen2.. the last proton Gen2 comes with much powerful CPS engine.
reliability = same
capabilities = luggage size Persona Win, power wise - Gen2 win
Fuel Consump = about Same
Finishing Quality = depends on type. Basic ? Medium ? or High Line ?

where are you from eh ?

Thank you Mosh for your kind reply. I am Muhammad, from Egypt.

Here in Egypt, Persona and Gen 2 come with IAFM Campro engines only. No CPS engines are supplied.

What about stability and finished quality for the High Line category?

Thank you in advance for your further help.

Best regards,
Muhammad

Salam Muhammad,

I've been in both car, more or less they are the same.

The H-Line trim locally comes with lots of extra accesories and mostly leather trim. They tend to be equipped with ABS/EBD.

In terms of handling/braking, it can rival Japanese sports sedan at speed lower than 140kmph. Having said that the IAFM does not boast much power at higher RPM (the CPS version does) therefore these cars will start to struggle when RPm crosses 4000 mark . I'm not sure what's the average speed of highway in egypt, but this may be something you need to consider.

If available, at the same price bracket, the latest Proton Preve outpaces both car, with bigger boot space, also comes with a more powerful 1.6 CFE engine with CVT combo.

Thank you very much Unpro,

I do appreciate your kind reply.

Unfortunately, the CPS version of Campro engine does come to Egypt. Engines in Gen 2 and Persona are IAFM versions only.

The maximum allowed rated speed here is 120 kmph in some highways.

Also, Proton Preve has not arrived to Egypt yet. It seems it will come in the year 2014 or 2015 Insha ALLAH.

For me, I like to drive within the maximum allowed speed or less. I like regular quiet speed, not sport-like type.

The questions I would like to ask is: how effective is the brake system of Persona\Gen 2?

Some here complain of the mediocre quality of the braking system in Proton - I think these are individual complaints due to manufacturing faults.

Could you please reassure me in this concern?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Muhammad

Salam,
Poor braking could be down to individual preference.
Some like to step hard on the pedal.do this often within short period of time and the oe pad will fade.
Plus,oe pad are not known for their braking power.
Nonetheless its sufficient for normal everyday driving.

As-Salamu Alaikom Brother,

Thank you a lot for your appreciated reply.

Does this mean Proton braking system is effective enough?

"OE pads are not known for their braking power" - Could you please elaborate on this?

Thank you in advance.

Muhammad

Salam again,

I have so far driven a few protons for hundreds of kilometers each. A short review here

Iswara 80s car, bought new 2003 (my own) - Lousy brakes, good handling. All counts down to the cheap tyres I use.

Exora MPV 2011 (my own) - Superior brakes, superior handling, 120kmph in torrent rain on the highway (has EBD/ABS).

Inspira 2011 - Cloned from Mitsubishi Evo, this is a race sedan. 100kmph on twisty back road at night, in the rain, with full 5 people in the car. All sleeping except for me.

Proton BLM - Inspite of being basic, it has ABS/EBD. Superior handling/braking vs other small cars.

Persona 1st Generation, no IAFM - Better than both BLM and Exora for braking and handling, but not as good as Inspira once you hit over 100kmph. The version I drove have no EBD/ABS, but I still carve corners like there's no tomorrow as I am very confident with the braking and handling.

Gen 2 - Drove once for short distance, since this is the first generation, I dare say it does not feel as planted as Persona. Feels smaller too.

Overall, I would say ALL new proton cars have good braking and handling. 120kmph is not a problem. Between Persona and Gen2, in my experience from their first batch, I would say Persona is a better car overall. But due to exports requirement, the handling and braking for both car in your country might be the same. You probably should be more concerned about the boot space.

Persona boots with seats folded.

Gen 2 has smaller boot

One of the main reason people go for Gen2 is that it came with the Campro CPS engine, an overpowered high FC powerplant. Also bear in mind, Persona is a newer design.

Peace be upon you bro,

Thank you for kind reply.

Your info is very helpful and insightful for me.

What about the fuel consumption in Persona and Gen 2?

I read once that the Achilles' heel or the weakness point of Campro Egines is the poor fuel consumption - Is this right?

Or the fuel conumption in Persona\Gen 2 depends merely on the way of driving?

Kindly advise.

Thanks in advance.

the first gen Persona yielded 9.9km per liter driving around town, on a manual tranny. With the IAFM, you should see 9km to 14km per liter on an auto tranny. This will roughly be the same with Gen 2.

Assuming you will get the auto, note that the gearbox requires servicing every 20,000km. You must use an SPIII rated auto gearbox oil. Most service center will pour in Dexron III, stating it's still III. But the fact is Dexron II is below spec and you will experience lagging and high FC. I changed my Exora's gearbox oil to SPII recently and sometimes I even get a screeching start.

Mitsubishi , Kia and Hyundai all uses SPIII gearbox oil. If parts for these cars are common in your country, you should have no problem.

Proton also recommends SAE 30 engine oil (5W30, 15W30 , any oil with 30 at the end. Not sure if Egypt has frozen winter, in malaysia we don't need to care what's number is the winter scale) Most SC will use 20W50 oil. Too heavy for normal use unless you are towing something. Look for engine oil with ILSAF 4/5 rating, this can save up to 5% more fuel.

Unless... they sell the IAFM / CVT over there...

p.s. : Proton Saga SE and lower trim Preve auto both comes with IAFM / CVT combo.
