As we all know we do car insurance to to provide financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise therefrom. In many countries its compulsory to insure a car at the time of its purchase. So I would like to rise a question what are the important things that we should know before insuring a car and can you compare the car insurance company on their policy.

First of all i would like to ask. Where are you from?. In the malaysian context, all road vehicle is compulsory to have at least a third party insurance policy irrespective the age of your car.
If you require a comprehensive motor insurance policy, check the market value of you car so that your insured value is adequate to compensate you should a mishap occurred. The policy terms & conditions is standard across the board. Next is to decide whether you need additional coverage such as windscreen, Flood, passenger liability etc. Then check which company gives the lowest excess clause value. No matter which company you purchase your policy, the premium paid is about the same unless you fall under the bad risk or have bad claim experience. The malaysian market uses a different formula to determine how much you need to pay.
And then, decide from which insurance company you should buy from , check with fellow friends which one give the a good after sales service when a claim occurred. Basically that about it.

Yes, definitely you should get the quotes of car insurance from different car insurance companies before buying car insurance. When you will get the different quotes, then you have to compare them and select one of them, which is best according to your requirement and budget.

Nothing much to compare in Malaysia. We don't have rules such as:
- age range. The younger you are, the more expensive.
- big variations on premium and/or discount. No such thing, mostly will be fixed, based on sum insured.

Most people don't compare, just get and follow the insurance company that the cars dealer comes with, like ING, Tokyo Marine etc.
