Its not water splash.

Its extended braking from high speed or downhill run, even worst if it was follow by a complete stop with the system continue to be pressed hard while stopping.

Or emergency breaking for a new car, where the pads and disks are not yet bed-in properly.

It is also depends on your driving.
The more you use the faster it uses up.

I had a Camry 2003 & the front disc pads lasted 160k km (160,000)
