I think the be fair, the Altis does feel pretty powerful when u move up from say, a Wira... I remember when I first bought my previous Altis in 2003, I could race with the Lexus IS200 because I knew the latter was a little under-powered... Of course I lost lah but could follow... Now I have rode in both the Mark V (previous gen) and VI (current gen) Golf GTi and in this case, my fren just blasted his Mark V GTi and man, that was fast! He took it out just from MidValley to the entrance into the Fed Highway towards PJ/Shah Alam and u can feel the G-force pulling you into your seats alto it was just maybe 500m! It was a totally different experience! Of course those who have been in an Evo will tell you that that's another experience!

I remember years ago in a Wira 1.5 (M) trying to chase a Putra 1.8... Can't even follow, let alone chase... Now if you take the Altis 1.8, it can probably match the Putra 1.8 (I think twin cam DOHC)... But Altis and Golf 1.4? No match lah... The 0-100 km/h time for the Golf 1.4 is 7.9 secs, right? Altis 1.8 is probably just around 10.5 secs max...

Golf 1.4 TSI official VW quoted 0-100 time is 8.0 secs...... and VW are know to be conservative with their claims... in other words, real world performance is faster still smile_big.gif

Thats why never make a conclusion that TA is faster than a Golf 1.4TSI..Even my Camry 2.0G also being tapao by a Peugeot 308 Turbo..It is only a 1.6 litre engine. Moreover with a lighter body as well. I just can follow its back only.

Putra still have better advantage since its much lighter than the Altis...

Yeah, you may be right... But when I was driving the Wira 1.5 (M) 10 years ago, the Putra was really the car to catch! That I can personally vouch for! It just goes further and further away! smile.gif

wow bravo bravo for the polo test drive.
certainly have to give credit where credit's due.

but the review was a bit weird as in there's this total ignorance on other engine manufacturers.
gosh there's always other technologies right?
how would one think of a modded test drive car?
it is what it is.
just suggest being open to the world, stay humble and i believe the first step was taken.

i applaud you for coming back mr. langdon. can't wait for your 1.4 review.

Well, at least Mr. Langdon is trying to be impartial by actually making an effort to test drive the Polo. Everybody is at their learning curve as far as motoring world is concern. I learn my lesson quite a few years ago when I was test driving an Accord an Audi pass by, said something jokingly about the brand Audi and the Honda SA bluntly told me that the Accord is ten years behind Audi in almost every aspect.....
I didn't buy the Accord ;-p

i like to share some opinions here, having a short stint working with a VW dealer in 2010.

the polo, being a 1.2 hatchback is capable of hitting a top speed of 200kph.

the 1.4 engine fitted to Golf 160 and Scirocco 160 is capable of pushing the car to a top speed in the region of 220-230kph. i will post a video to proof this.

the secret to this superb performance is a twin charged engine (supercharger to give fat low end torque and a turbocharger for superior high end torque) together with direct injection and DSG.

this is why the Golf 160 can be more economical than a myvi, and lower exhaust emission level than a a Viva but performance of a Camry 2.4 with better power-to-weight ratio.

the issue here is not about top speed and fantastic acceleration but more like driving refinement and environment friendly.

no other car manufacturer can sell us a car with 7 speed manual gearbox car, with robotised mechanisms to be driven as intelligent automatics. VW has them all.
