For the benefit of all Toyota owners using HID bulb. Mine just blew after 5 years, and I had to replace the bulb.

And yes, Toyota quoted me RM750 to change the bulb, and I was appalled. But actually it is one pair (2 pieces) because one box have two pieces. Not sure if Toyota will sell just one bulb as it is considered a loose piece.

In reality, the bulb is a Philips Ultinon D4S, and you can buy this bulb from ebay or at accessory shop, but the price is the same as Toyota. Conclusion, Toyota does not overcharge for the bulb.

But the accessory shop sold me just one piece, so I paid RM380 to replace only the blown bulb. Neither Toyota nor the accessory shop gave a warranty. This is because Philips itself does not give a warranty. But the high quality of the bulb probably is very realiable.

But beware, I can now understand why it comes in a pair. Because my left and right headlamp now not same in brightness and color. The new one is brighter, and whiter. The bulb is exactly the same, but the difference is due to age. As the HID bulb ages, it turns a bit yellow and also darker. Nothing can be done about this, so that's why HID bulbs should be changed in a pair.

The color difference was very slight, and was acceptable. The brightness, when in the basement car park, facing the wall, you can see left side so bright and nice, right side a bit dark. It reminds me of what my HID lights were like when I first took delivery of the car 5 years ago. Now I'm thinking of changing my other bulb too, but I'll see how it goes.

There are cheaper HID bulbs from China and Taiwan too. I tested those too. About half the price (less than RM400/pair), but don't go for that. Compared against my old bulb, side by side. The color is noticeably different, lacking in brightness, and I did not see a strong beam, more like light dispersion. Think of light from a torch light and that from a lamp.

Also if the light flickers, it is either due to the bulb or it was not fitted well. Not a serious matter.

Again conclusion. Its better to change at Toyota, and better in one pair. Its the price of using HID headlamp, unless you opt for the Halogen.

PS: I'm not affiliated with Toyota except I'm a satisfied owner.

QUOTE (best007 @ Jul 26 2010, 02:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The first time I realised was a few weeks ago when someone told me that my headlamp did not turned on, on the driver side. I didnt believe it coz when I switched on the headlights again, both turned on as usual.

Then on Saturday, on the way back to my house, I switched on the lights because it was raining. On the way I saw the reflection on the vehicle on front and I saw only one light is on. So I stopped at a petrol station and went out of the car. I snapped a photo of the incident. I then switched off and on again, the lights are on as usual - both of them.

This morning (Monday), the same thing happened again. I called the Toyota SC and asked my regular service personnel, he said to bring in the car for inspection. I asked him what could be the problem and he said it could be that the HID bulb is nearing to end its lifetime or probably some loose connection somewhere. Asked whether the bulb is covered under the warranty he said it is not but he assured me that they are going to look at this issue.

The HID bulb is estimated to cost around RM700+..

I wonder if other fellow Camry owner with HID light face the same problem?

I feel sorry to hear of your HID problem.
Its probably your HID ballast that's kaput.

This is exactly the point i hv raised here numerous times about the "warranty".
Even if its 5yrs warranty, whats the use if many ridiculously expensive parts are not covered by that warranty?, and many of these parts failing prematurely?

The warranty is just a ploy to make u buy the car, and then slowly squeezing money from you over that specific period.

Excellent comment!
I agree with you on all, except the flickering part.
From my experience, its due to the ballast. A malfunctioning ballast can also cause this problem, and can also shorten the lifespan of the HID capsule (aka bulb).

i'm having similar HID problem not sure is either the HID bulb or the circuit board. It's on the driver's side.
sometimes the HID just got off after several minutes. sometimes it just fine for the whole journey (an hour).

i've checked with toyota service centre and get quoted for RM 700+ just for 1 and not come with a pair..
i did not expect that HID bulb still cost for RM 700+ after 6 yrs. the price should go down after the technology is older... fine.
i went to accessories shop and get quoted for RM 200-220 for a pair HID bulb perhaps they are made from china mainland.

look for advise from the pros here.
1. should i do the replacement using non authorized/certified HID bulb? it cost me lesser but they are giving warranty of 12 months and its 1-to-1 replacement within the warranty period ofcourse.
2. in term of light/beam quality , i not too sure how big is the result different.
3. is the circuit board should be worried after installation - power consumption may be differ, may not have proper QA/QC?
4. i dont know what is the HID light on my camry 2008 - is it confirmed Philips ultinon d4s? where can i get those and DIY? any cheaper out there?
5. lastly, battery concern, 55D23LMF (13 blades) - which do you guys recommending? yokohama? century? bosch? yuasa? etc

i appreciate everyone response and advise.

Regards,
CL
