If I understand correctly, the car was stolen but is now found. The owner sakit hati to see his beloved ride that got molested by smelly thieves, so decides to sell it to ease the pain. But alas, the ECU was stolen so the car can't move. Is that correct?

Anyway, all you have to do is get a new ECU which I believe should be covered under insurance. Mileage should still remain as before. Based on what I think, car makers wouldn't be so dumb as to not incorporate some form of solid state memory to protect the odometer. What if I just disconnected and reconnected the ECU to reset the trip meter to scam a potential buyer?

IIRC, the main things stored on the ECU are the owner's driving pattern and any fault codes that occurred. Once reset (as in the case of replacing a new car battery), everything should default to normal and it will self-learn in a few days, during which the FC will suffer a bit until the ECU finds the best settings based on driving habits and air density. I'm sure stock ECUs have already been programmed for our specific climate and base sea level.

So fret not, just ask your fren to cucuk dan main.
