hi All Volvo owners,

For those who own a S80, please help me to answer the following
questions, as I'm going to get a used S80 year 2001 at RM 123K with 60K
km done.

1. Why does the Volvo S80 depreciation so high? Last time the 2001 model
was selling RM 270K, and today second hand only at RM 123K.

2. Is Volvo S80 same class with Mercedes S-Class or E-Class, BMW 5-series
or 3-series ?

3. Toyota Camry 2005 model better or S80 2001 better in terms of
maintenance cost, comfortability, quiteness?

4. I have checked the maintenance cost for S80, not really expensive, but
more expensive than the Japanese cars.

5. What are the common problems for S80 year 2001? If need repair, is it
very expensive ?

6. What are the differences between the model in 2001-2005?

7. The I'm going to buy was done only 60K km, is it consider low milege?

8. Volvo or Japanese car ?

Thanks.

i'm also eyeing an S80 as the price is now very reasonable. But am
worried as they be difficult to maintain and not very reliable as is
reflected in their low (relatively)price.

But after having an 855 for 6 months now, all this misapprehension about
reliability and difficulty in parts sourcing is unfounded.

So is a second hand S80 a value buy? Advice please

S80 year 2000 and 2001 are known worldwide as "lemon" cars as they are
problematic. If you wish to get S80, get year 2002 or above. Same goes
with S60. That's why they are so cheap(I wouldn't call it cheap though at
RM120k) now compared to other similar priced car brand new. Do a search
on "S80" on this forum, I believed somebody asked the same question like
yours with regards to S80 "cheap" price.Try checking this one out

My own experinece on S80 ownership was short lived, for the simple reason
I sold the car believing I had secured a job overseas, after selling it
the job deal collapsed leaving me wheel less...lol.

To answer a few questions you posed
First up...get the mileage verified at an authorised dealer lke SM...you
will be amazed by how many high mileage S80's there are that only show
60K on the clock...ask the seller if you can take it to the dealer and be
amused by his shift look and endless excusues.
Secondly..any S80 that you are going to buy, check that it has full dealer
service history stamped in the service booklet, then call the dealer and
verify that the schedule has been followed as per whats showing in the
book...I cant understand anyone splashing out on a 240K car and then
getting it serviced at some back street garage and voiding the warranty.
Thirdly..1999 and 2000 models are known to be a bit of a disaster, mainly
with with poor build quality and tons of electrical issues.
Number Four...make sure that any transmission updates have been done on
the car..there are several regarding the upshifting and downshifting on
the transmission...if they are not done it can lead you to a very
expensive repair
5...other recalls include fan module replacement.

On the bright side..its a bloody good car to drive long distance in..more
comfortable than my BMW 7 and mercedes AMG...easily accomadates three in
the back...I was getting good fuel consumption as well for its size and
weight...and safety wise its the best you will find on the road.Although
slightly under powered it would fly once you buried your right foot into
the long pile carpetWink

Maintenance wise...I found SM to be very friendly and effeient with
dealing with the issues I had...things to look out for are:
Transmission issues(harsh shifting)
Front Suspension..ball joints are prone to fast wear
Suspension seats for the springs...make a lot of creaking noise when worn
Brake boosters are prone to air leakage.when driving you will hear
hissing from the footwell if they fail
Electrics...usually silly stuff like a chaffed wire in the harness on the
engine bay...the protective conduit they use hardens with temp and age
and breaks easily allowing the wires to be exposed.
Never wash the engine with a pressure washer...expect loads of problems
afterwards
Expansion tanks are known to fail and throw out water..more so the cap
seal
The top engine mount is useless and expect to change every 12
months....if it fails twice within a year replace all mounts..one lower
one is an absolute pig to change.

It may sound a lot but do feel assured that the S80 is a joy to drive if
everything is maintained and regular on time servicing is performed.
As for residuel prices..well malaysia is not the only country to see huge
drops in second prices on the bigger Volvos...in the Uk you can buy a
fully loaded(with sat nav etc) year 2000 for a paltry 4000 quid...2002
models are now appearing for 8000 quid.

For me ,the most important check before buying is verifying
mileage, service record and if possible,a thorough check at SM before you
buy so you will be aware of any future outlay in maintenance.

Good luck in your search and enjoy if you buySmile

Hi kaminski,

Thanks a lot for ur replied.

Here are some of the questions that I need ur advise:-

1. Normally the used car dealer will not allow us to bring their car to
SC for checking or verifying. So, what else methods that we can check the
mileage. U mean the mileage shown on the meter is not correct? what about
the service booklet and the conditons in the car itself such as the
interior.

2. Is it year 2000 different from year 2001 or 2002 model ? what are the
changes ?

3. I have checked the Finance, they said the year 2001 model market value
is about 120K, and can loan upto 80%.

4. I only concern is the High Maintenance cost. Some people said you will
need to repair ur car every month and the cost will be from RM 500 -
10,000. This will kill me.

5. If a car mileage is only 60K km for 2001 model, do you think is a best
buy ?

6. What model you drove before?

7. Some people said the Volvo S80's height is too low, so most of the
S80's pumper were bang before.

8. There is one S80 in Sunway with 60K km, and the dealer said is a
Japanese owner. I checked the car interor, quite good, 2001 model selling
126K.

Thanks once again.

occasionally, FA and SM do offer used-car promotion, they are all
approved by FA and SM.

Wong,
I have no experience with the S80 and I have not heard anything about S80
of 2000/2001 being "lemons". Personally I think it is a good car and the
low 2nd hand value makes it a good proposition for my next "upgrade". Well
as Kaminski said, it is well cared for, it should be ok. Me think it
applies to most cars. Just make sure you have the full history of
maintenance since you're going to ditch out $120K.Cool

SC for checking or verifying. So, what else methods that we can check the
mileage. U mean the mileage shown on the meter is not correct? what about
the service booklet and the conditons in the car itself such as the
interior.
The actual mileage is stored in the onboard computer which can only be
accesed via a main dealer, hence some second hand dealers alter the visual
mileage but cannot alter the computer mileage. Why not ask the dealer
selling the car to verify the mileage,ie,in writing stating that the
indicating mileage has not been tampered with, then once bought take it to
SM and get it verified,if its false at least you have some recourse with
the seller.I am not sure if you can access the mileage info via the Volvo
Scan tool..if you can(ask the Volo dealer),then maybe it would be wise to
ask/pay SM to use the scan tool so that they can download the info at
their place and tell you the actual mileage. Regarding the service
booklet...if it is stamped lets say by FA,copy the info,ie mileage, date
serviced and then go to FA and verify that this is the case.Interior wear
as an indicator in Malaysia is a bit iffy as the facts are most dealers
replace/retrim/recondition as they see fit to inflate/maintain market
prices.

4. I only concern is the High Maintenance cost. Some people said you will
need to repair ur car every month and the cost will be from RM 500 -
10,000. This will kill me.
Its like buying any second hand car..you just dont know what will go
wrong with it.I replaced the front suspension seats,a ball joint and one
bush, the battery and it came to RM3000.Replacing the expansion tank and
cap assy came to RM520.The solenoid valve group on the transmission costs
a whopping RM8000 to change...some say changing the brake servo unit will
cost RM3000.When I bought my S80 I spent RM4000 on it in the first
month, after that it was just normal servicing...only part failure I had
was the expansion tank assy...I knew by outlaying for repairs to get the
car back to excellent condition would result in low maintenance costs in
the long run..and I did these repairs at SM as then, all the work is
warranted for 12 months after.

6. What model you drove before?
I had a December 2001 model,2.0L turbo..gold in colour

7. Some people said the Volvo S80's height is too low, so most of the
S80's pumper were bang before.
The ride height is pretty low on the S80..but I never banged
anything, only issue I had was the squeeks on the front suspension which
was fixed by replacing the rubber seats..but I have seen a few with
smashed front skirts(where the fog lights mount) where the owners have
parked to close to a high kerb.
You can raise the ride height by using different shocks and springs..and
by changing the rims to a larger diameter.

One last thing..bargain bargain with the sellers...they are buying these
cars for about 95K upto 105K and selling them on for 120+K.

Good luck in your search

By the way..there was another S80 owner with the nick S80 who used to
frequent this board and the one at VOCM...maybe you could ask him for
input..and by visiting one of the TT's that VOCM have you could gain
valuable pointers there as well.
