I am planning to buy a good 2nd hand volvo. I have 2 choices, a volvo 850
company car (1997),or a 940 Volvo (only been used 64K km) owner always
being overseas, both same price RM28K. Which is better? I believe 850 is
more popular model than 940 .. Pls advice me ....thanks!

cylinder 850. If you like a weaker 4 cylinder engine and think that 850
is too powerful for you....get the weaker 940.
Unless of course you get the 940 big turbo model...but still...it'll
never be as refined as the butter smooth 5 cylinder 850.

than the 850. Noise (coming from the car) is lower. There's 2 version of
the 850 - 10 Valves and 20 valves, there's a difference in power. 940 has
several versions too - NA, HPT, LPT. Lastest is the LPT which has very
good drivablity in town. Enough to touch 180kmh on the highway.
As for me, I'll prefer the turbo models than the NA, so I'm now with my
second 940 LPT. Had the 850-T5 before, spent alot maintaining it after
selling my first 940 LPT Harmony. Killer on 850 cars - gearbox, abs
system, oil seal leaks, suspensions, engine mountings, roof lining,
headlamps (brightness), dashboard, air-cond. So better check them out
properly.
However if you like the car, forget what people say, just go for it
because there are alot of owners on the road and positive feedbacks are
always there. Loan is up to your records and relationship with the
bankers.

NA (8V & 12V) is before 1995
HPT is during 1995, it has the egg-crate (squarish blocks) front grille
and mostly with 20 spoke rims.
LPT doesn't come with sports rims unless the owners changed theirs and
they have the waterfall (straight down) chrome front grille. They're from
year 1996 onwards.
From engine bay, NA 8V very simple, 4 in-line, no turbo of course. NA 12V
is DOHC, very obvious. HPT's have the word TURBO on the air filter case.
Turbo is Garret. On the dash, there's a turbo/vacuum gauge there. For the
LPT, turbo is from Mitsubishi. All turbos are 8V, 4 cylinders in-line.
Most 1996 LPt have auto-cuise, later years have air-bags too. The turbos
have ABS, not sure about NA.

remember seeing a 12valve Volvo engine. HPTs are from 1993 to 1995.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

My bad ... typo error - 16V on the DOHC 940s
Freifeit,
We tok tok 940 lah .. 850 DOHC is 10V or 20V liao
Alexklchew,
940 NA not too impressive on the figures but they're not too bad on
drivability. Forgot about the turbos BHP already but now I've tuned mine
to about > 200HP. Prices not more than 30k and not less than 10k
throughout the range but I won't sell mine for under 35k also
