Original Poster: AOC
Original Post: Funny that you mention the whistling sound. My 144S (small bumper) has that too and I`m still trying to figure out what causes it. I just bought the Haynes guide to 100 series hopefully the suggestion in there will lead me in the direction of whats wrong.

The book did mention that it could be the evapourite system, or carb and the list goes on. If anyone out there who has managed to solve that problem pls share.

AOC, I suspect the carb system bcoz the 144 FI Overdrive didn`t have this sound. Maybe I`m wrong as I heard the sound whenever a 144 (big bumper and the small bumper before it with rectangular tail lamps- not your model) passed by me when I`m walking.

I am starting this thread to discuss the 144 models that were later succeeded by the 244, 264 and 240.

How many types of engine displacements were there? I know the 1st 144 S came with a 1.8 engine (the version with chromed grille) and later 2.0, with the 164 topping the list with its 3.0 B30 engine.

Sorry for the delay. My time is 12hr behind you. For another day that is and then home sweet home I here I come. From the way the Haynes manual descript the operation of the carb I must say I more or less agree with you but I haven`t had a chance to check it out yet. The 140 series had only 1 capacity if my memory serves me right 1986cc. The B30 can only be found on the 164 while the B18 is on the 122. But through the years many ppl had transplanted their engine like my friend who drives the 164. The original came with the B30 but I guess that was too much for the original owner to bear (road tax I mean) and he transplanted a B18 in to it. So my friends say that his car lack power but makes up for it in terms of economy.

Pls pardon me if I don`t respond to this tread in coming days because like I said earlier, I`ll be traveling back from the states on Thursday and I don`t expect to get my hands on a PC until earliest Mon most likely Tuesday.

There are 144 models with 1.8 engine right? The one sharing similar rims and hubcap with 122.

Guess what, I saw a 164 big bumper today. It was parked just after the Sbg Jaya toll in Kulim direction and broken down, I think. I wish I had the resources to restore a big bumper 164 as I really admire the front look.

The 164 you saw belongs to my colleague. Mine PAX3422. Feel free to flag me down if you see me. I wouldn`t mind taking you on a spin. I lived in Penang though and I don`t usually travel over to the mainland.
