Report from someone who went along to try and help ...

Happy New Year and what a way to usher in the new year...doing relief
work.
I'll be posting some pictures up on our site. You may not be able to see
much from there...taken from my phone but even then, as long as you're
not there to see for yourself, you'll never be able to see and understand
the damage water can cause.

To say that I've done my part for the year is an understatement...to say
that I've not done anything for these people would also not be wrong.
There was a complete mess of things when the call for help came in. This
is how it went...

The call for help came in on Tuesday evening calling for all 4x4 owners
to help bring relief goods up to Kuala Muda. Since it was the end of the
year and nothing much was happening, what the hell right? We were given
instructions to bring all recovery eqt...extra food and beddings just in
case we had to stay over. Next morning, the convoy was to meet up at
Nationwide Express' HQ in Shah Alam where they would distribute the goods
and we'll be on our way. Call time was 0830hrs or earlier if possible.
Bloody rushed there only to find out that 3/4 of the expected cars were
not even there yet. OK...never mind, maybe it's still the standard
Malaysian time thing.
We all waited till 1000hrs before we were told to move our rigs
to the other side of the office where all the rations were stored.
OK...we mozzied on along and about 20 odd rigs lined up AND only to be
told that we didn't have to load our vehicles as Nationwide will
transport it up to Kedah and we'll drive our empty trucks up!!! What the
hell did they need so many cars then right?? OK...never mind, maybe they
needed us to go in different directions once all the stuff was sent up
there...

At about 1030hrs, loud speakers were going off and people were making
speeches...OH WOW...we're in the news, OK...maybe we can leave now?
Alright...let's get moving! Engines started, cars started to roll off.
One corner after leaving the premise, we were all radioed to go back to
the office because that was just for officiating purposes. Now there's
breakfast!

At about 1115hrs, we were told to remove some of the stuff from the
Nationwide trucks and into ours. WHAT THE %^&#''s HAPPENING HERE????
OK...never mind, maybe there was just some confusion earlier on.

Convoy moves and pulls into Rawang R&R for re-fueling, waited again...
Convoy pulls off and slowly moves upwards and pulls into Tapah R&R for
lunch and after lunch we waited
yet again...

Convoy moves again after much waiting and by 1600hrs we pulled into Juru
and waited AGAIN!!! This time for the bloody CEO of Nationwide. He wanted
to be part of the convoy!! THIS IS SO FULL OF CROCK MAN!!!

We finally moved into Kuala Muda at 1800hrs. The Kedah chapter of Mercy
opened up a storage space and told us to off load the lorry. The other
lorry was sent to Penang as they also needed goods there.

Then the best thing is that we were told that we're not allowed to go
into the Tsunami site as the police has cordoned it off. They had their
reasons for doing it. So we had special pass to just drive into the site
at 1930hrs (when its all dark already). We then moved on to Tanjung Dawai
which was
another disaster site further up north where we off loaded everything
else.
After which...(listen to this...it's unbelievable)...THANK YOU LADIES AND
GENTLEMEN, YOUR MISSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED!! So...what kind of relief
work was there? Don't ask me! Ask Nationwide Express...they took over
everything and turned it into a circus!

We stayed on the next day and tried to go into Kuala Muda again.
Successful in gaining entry and there …helped out the people at the
kampung. Pull some houses down, cars out etc...whatever we could do, we
did.
Gathered some of our soldier boys who were not doing anything anyway to
help clear the place. After all that, at about 1600hrs, we were told to
leave the TO ibf_aReport from someone who went along to try and help ...
