frankly speaking...Altis and City is a different class altogether!!
no need to compare at all...furthermore the reason for a change
is b'cos of the financial burden...and not the car itself...so
why want to compare....
if I can afford an Altis (a higher class)...i will go for the
Altis ...instead of City...

Well, ikttan, in Msia, it is very hard to differential between a man or
female car. An ordinary man, he had no choice but go for Proton or
Perodua.
City and Vios, price above Proton but below RM100k. So, for those who has
already fed-up with Proton and looking for something below RM100k, we
have no choice but to select between Vios, City or any other non-Proton
make in this pricing.
If we are in USA, cars are dirt cheap! Then, we can catagorise what
female or male car. But not in Msia. We buy what we can afford, thank you
very much to our good friend.
Hopefully, by 2008, when tax drop to 5%, we can buy what we like, instead
of buying what we can afford.

mdrudy and rx330,
This is what I come to gather about the City. Doing my "research" while
looking for a car since my 8-month old "baby" was stolen in Carrefour
Subang Jaya . Really traumatic experience....was considering contis
and Korean at one point until the City came .... Toyotas seemed to be
very "HOT" nowadays.
City new tech iDSI - It's a (second generation) DSI engine, built for fuel
economy and minimal maintenance NOT performance. If you're into
performance Vios scores here.
Engine reliability, well the Japanese Jazz/Fit (with the same iDSI engine
and CVT) has been around for at least a year now, that speaks some truth
in that sense so far....so let's see how it fares in the days to come.
After all the Jazz/Fit didn't dethrone the beloved Corolla in 2002 if
there's nothing special about it.
About the CVT and low horsepower rating, well do agree that it is more
suitable for city driving as the torque comes in early. Vios has more
power albeit on paper. During my test drive the power is evidently better
when I engage the S(Sports)-mode rather than the D-mode. Overtaking cars
during an uphill ascent (7 % aspect, 200m) was no problem, very amazed to
look at the stable RPM gauge. I will not make any comparisons here, just
go and enjoy the test drive if you have the chance.
"CVT is on rubber belt". Not really sure what you are referring to. Steel
belts are more like it.
I've asked the salesman about the overall maintenance cost, especially the
dual spark plugs. Was shown the comparative maintenance schedule (vis-a-
vis the previous City), apparently the spark plugs last twice longer. The
coolant are only replaced after 100,000 Km (yes it is one hundred thound
km, hope they are not pulling a fast one on this). The current Honda City
runs on TIMING CHAIN (just like the Cefiro), so you can expect minimal
maintenance/change in this sense, I hope . Hey ! may be that's why HM
dares to throw in 2 years free maintenance.
The ALtis is more luxurious, that's a fact. But City is not far behind. To
digress, I don't feel comfortable looking at this beloved car being used
as a Taxi up north in Thailand. Neither do I like to see Camries, Mercs in
a taxi outfit overseas. However, this sure showed that the Toyotas are
RELIABLE. Who can't forget the TV footages showing Toyota pickups in
action at Afganistan and Somalia.
BTW just for the record, I own a 23-year-old Nissan (120Y sometimes for
work and nostalgic purposes), Honda (Civic '97 for Wifey - the second
Honda for her). Lucky didn't trade in either one of these for our Ex-Altis
(the current low trade-in price was a blessing in disguise). Have to get
another car for myself as my Nissan is being "overworked" and wifey is
travelling further to work. So patah kakilah if Wifey off to work. I'm not
aligned to any brand (it's ridiculous considering that all manufacturers
are after our money), only practical cars for my own purpose.
Hope my inputs help.

phoonly, rx330,
sorry if it offended you guys in anyway of me refering the city as a
ladies car. i agree with rx330 that we dun really have a choice in
malaysia which is why i drive a proton. phoonly, i have nothing
against the city, in fact, i was one of the first ones to pay the
showrooms a visit on the first day it was launched. the interior is
impressive. what i meant to say was that when the city was designed, was
it not targetted at city dwellers and ladies , very much like all
daihatsu cars (so, phoonly, the answer is yes, nearly all of daihatsus
were designed specifically with lady drivers in mind. now, i am not
saying that there is anything wrong with driving these cars if you are a
guy. i am just stating the fact that much consideration on lady drivers
were input into the car).
i am still waiting for the vios and march (if ever) to see which of the 3
will be the best on offer. thinking of getting one of these early next
year
