Hi guys/gals,
You guys/gals seen the specs of the new Toyota Vios? VVTi engine with
109ps. Translated to hp, it has roughly 141hp. Not sure whether the
figure is on the wheel or on crank. If it is on the crank, then the on
wheel figure is around 120hp!!!! That is on par with a Satria GTi. Head
that GTi only has around 121hp on the wheel dynoed. Looks like GTis will
have lots of hard time on the road now.
Care to comment?
Regards,
GZ

I think you've mistaken 'ps' for 'kW'. 109ps is actually a tad less than
109hp. 109kW is about 141hp
109hp. 109kW is about 141hp

Gromit, you are right. Sorry. But still...the Vios is quite a car since
similar 1.5 is rated at 88hp (Honda City). Even the 1.6 series from
Peugeot are rated at 110hp.

Ultimate power figures do not tell the whole story. U'll have to look at
the power and torque curves and the gear ratios too..

No need to compare the figures. Go test it and we'll know.
I went test drive 2 days ago, surprisingly they allow me to take it to the
highway for a spin. Wacked the car a little, was surprise it can pull to
6000 rpm easily. After the test drive, first thing came to my mind is
whether to sell my proton satria and get a loan for the vios.

Right on IIsaw...
And no way will Vios (nor Altis..auto somemore) take on GTi/Putra/Wira
1.8/MIVECS/Honda B16s,B18s...
It's more of nice, comfy family or young executive compact everyday sedan.

Read in today's Sun newspaper that it has a 4th gear ratio (auto) of 0.700
and a final drive ratio of 3.850.
Compared to a 1.8L 4G93P auto's equivalent ratios of 0.685 and FD 4.007,
the overall ratios are lower. Very unconventional automatic ratios for
such a smal cc engine. The VVTi must really be beefing up the low to mids.
The torque figure was just a little shy of 150NM at a pretty mid range
rpm. In comparison the 4G93P generates 164NM at a high 5500rpm.

I drove the Toyota Echo in Sydney recently, with the same 1NZ-FE 1.5 VVT-i
engine and auto gearbox for about 2 weeks. Basically the Vios is based
loosely on the Echo, with the same G.O.A. floorpan. Suspension setup and
brakes are the same as the lower spec Vios i.e. rear drums.
Yes, the engine has pretty strong midrange torque due to the vvt-i. The
stall speed of the autobox (about 2500rpm) matches the rise of the torque
peak, hence the car feel pretty lively. Coupled with the light weight (sub-
1 ton), power to weight ratio is pretty good.
On a particular damp road, a strong kickdown from 3rd to 2nd gear spun the
front wheels (or wheel, no LSD).

The vvt-i Vios is nothing to shout about, in comparison to the Corolla
Sportivo just launched in Australia at $30K. Imagine a Corolla fitted with
the Celica VVTL-i 141kW engine and 6 speed gearbox... bone stock from the
factory.
