Hi there,

I'm a newbie here and I don't do much car detailing stuffs. I am driving an old sedan of about 12 years (got it second hand), but it is still looking new and considerably shiny, EXCEPT some scratches and knocks a little here and there.

I am currently in the midst of planning to buy a new car, therefore I would like to sell this one off to trade in for my new one.

I afraid that if I were to bring my car for valuation, it would decrease its value a lot, so I am thinking to do some touch ups. I have some questions, which I hope the kind forumers here could help me.

1) Is it worth the money spent to do the touch up before I send it for valuation (at the dealer)?

2) How much would it roughly cost for me to do the touch-ups? Looking at the current condition (1. scratches on the left and right, paint smeared from other vehicles as it had been scratched by a truck before; 2. One side of the front light has come off as well, also from a minor accident), I thought of doing some touch-up. Any idea how much would it be?

3) Does anyone have recommendations of where would be a good place for me to send my car to for such paint job, please? I have not been to any, as I have only made trips related to my car to my regular mechanic. I'm located in the Klang Valley and I don't mind travelling to a place that offers good value for money service. :)

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi, Will be difficult to give you a figure without seeing the damage, but normally they will spray by panel to look good. If only spray that spot might have difference in color and may look worse. One panel normally RM100 to 150 also depends on the paint type. Does the scratch require knocking, meaning like a dent need to smoothen back?

Normally it is good to touch up if selling to end user direct. If selling as trade in don't bother also can as they normally give you price according to the car age unless the car is in very good condition. Used car dealer will give you lower trade in price as they need to hold the car and usually they will do the touch up before selling...

Hi there,

Thank you so much for your kind reply and helpful advice! I have attached these photos if you don't mind to have a look at them. I have resized them due to the size allowance, so hope they are clear. Not too sure about knocking but I'm guessing spraying is required?

But if I were to sell it directly to the car dealer, the price difference will be a lot, yes? Looks like i would need to go and ask for the price of few places, true? The internal system needs to be repaired quite a bit, so I guess I have no choice but to send it to the car dealer, yes? Also if I were to trade in for a new car, the dealer would also reduce the selling price quite a fair bit, yes?

Thank you very much once again for your reply!

If sell direct to Used car dealer usually low price. If trade in for new car can negotiate with sales person. If touch up can sell more to end user but it will take time getting a buyer unless you are lucky. Probably need to advertise, or bring to Used car market but need to pay some fees. So lower price easier to dispose off, want higher need to do more work.....lol

As for the damage, looks ok, more like scratches and damage to the paint work. I think they can sand down, putty up and re-spray. Ask quotes from few shops before deciding.....

Thank you once again for your helpful reply! Ahh.. so meaning to say that: with all the hassles, it would be better to just trade in with the car dealer right? And if I were to purchase a new car (as opposed to 2nd hand car) I am also able to trade in with the new car dealer right? If I am not selling it to the end user, then no point doing the touch up, true? Because they will look at the age of the car.. right?

Thank you once again!

Yup, is like working for those extra difference you can get from the sales direct vs trade in, or more or less you become used car dealer....lol

Whether you trade in to used car or for new car depends on the car you are getting. Some new car sales person also deal with used car to get rid of them.

Yah! in a way they will say I need to touch up this and that and deduct a bit of your selling price. Used car pricing also depends one. Like my Wira I sold which was in very good condition, I ask for 2k over his offer. After a few calls he agreed. I got a feeling he got buyer already, because if he offer higher and keep the car, price will depreciate....lol
