A Mini is a work of design genius- carries 4 and luggage in a 10 foot wheelbase.... reliable and cheap. It also had power and handling to become a very successful race car in beating much larger and more powerful opponents in its day. The current "Mini" is nothing like that- it's HUGE outside but not very large inside, has all the maintenance issues of any modern "disposable" car and has none of the brilliance of the original.
A VW Beetle is another work of genius- aircooled boxer four, doesn't produce much power but the car does not stop for anything. It has a lot of interior space, was comfortable to ride in and had the magic RR-layout handling which Porsche drivers go nuts for. The "icon" is nothing but an icon- something made to look like something that was great. FF layout, watercooled.... the only thing Beetle about it is the body shape.
A Range Rover is a special vehicle- it does EVERYTHING well. It transports 5 people and luggage on highways in as much comfort as a 5 series or E class sedan, it transports all the IKEA flat packs you want and yes... it can do it again over all the estate roads and logging tracks a Defender can cross. THAT is what a Range Rover is.... this Evoque on the other hand is no more than a dressed up CRV good for no more than taking ladies shopping, or kids to school.
When I think back to watching Jeremy Clarkson laughing at the BMW X5 on Top Gear, inventing the term "on-roader" to describe offroad-incapable SUVs like the X5, Harrier, Murano, Cayenne etc etc etc, and comparing it back to a Range Rover (a real one- the L322) to show the audience what a "real" off-roader could do and I watch him now, driving the Evoque through 6-inch deep streams you could cross in a Perodua Viva to show the Evoque is offroad-capable, I get sick to my stomach...... how much have we been ayam-ised by these people. How easily they make us part with our hard-earned cash just by sticking a respected brand on something mediocre but flashy and driving it through a puddle.
It's just so they can make money, people- your money...... and that makes me think back to another episode of Top Gear when Clarkson destroyed a Perodua Kenari in "anger" because he "hates" people who make "crap" cars just to "make money". Interesting he hasn't taken the same slegdehammer to a New "Mini", New "Beetle" and and Evoque now, isn't it?

no...although it does not have the offroad capabilities of its bigger brothers, it's still a good car, it can offroad, besides, how many people will take evoques offroading? Times have changed, these cars are sought after for town use. At most people will take it to the estates, and I'm sure it will handle estate roads well. Nobody's gonna drive into a jungle with one. In this day and age, you either make a good product or go out of business. On you comparing evoque to kelisa, its not as crappy. Inside it's nice, beautifully made. No need to mention about the exterior which is gorgeous. New mini? You think it's crap, maybe it's not for you but it drives beautifully, as many have said, like a go kart on the road, a cliche but a true one. New beetle? No comment, I don't like beetles and I can tell you Jeremy doesn't like them also. You would know if you are running a car company.

I understand your point and agree with it in some respects but SUVs are bought by people who want large interior capacity rather than off roading ability. It's a relatively new market segment.
Land Rover brought in Posh Spice and Wayne Rooney's wife as consultants on the Evoque. That gives you an idea of who this was aimed at. It's not an off-road vehicle and you'd be mad to even try to take it off-road. It's designed for milfs doing the school run.
The Mini is a big seller because it is a very stylish car. It's nothing like the original. BMW can't make an original mini because now-a-days those cars are made by people like Tata with the Nano.
The Beatle is a particularly cold attempt by VW to drag some more money out of their icon. I hope the new one offers something better.
I guess the point though is that these cars became icons because they were technological leaps. Now-a-days, the boffins who run car companies are all about the profit ratios and market share and seem to have little concern for their craft.

Like it or not, these 3 cars are very successful! in it exclusive group by itself.
Evoque - sell till you have to wait for a very long delivery and at that price is affordable - I like and will consider to buy
Mini - Cooper S - will buy if I have the extra spare, Like and will buy
Beetle - since the icon is launch - worldwide supply shortage and again long waiting delivery time, 6 - 9 months and till 2014!!! Love & Signed and waiting till neck also long.

Kinda like those mass-produced "Swiss" watches which are really made in Spain or China...... the only thing Swiss about them is the brand name and the pricetag, but hey- there's no shortage of people lining up to buy those either, is there?
Me, I'm done. It's one thing to watch a British motoring journalist laugh at X5s and Harriers and call them "on-roaders" or destroy a Kelisa on grounds that it's "offensive" that people make cars "like this just to make money" but to THEN expect me to swallow a product that's no less "on-roader" than the X5 and no more Range Rover than that Kelisa was is quite beyond even my credulity.
You name the marketing gimmick and I've fallen for it. I've fallen for them ALL..... Alfas, Fiats, Jaguars, Citroens, Renaults, Audis... and yes... even a Range Rover...... but this one is asking too much of even me!
So.... good luck Evoque owners and buyers, one and all and congratulations on your new "Range Rover". I'm sure the neighbours and office mates will be very impressed indeed!
Ignore the sniggering in the background- that'll just be me.

You see, when Land Rover created something new back in 1975- a comfortable, less agricultural 4x4 which would be equally at home on the highways and in the boondocks, they had the courage to call it something new.... they gave the new car a new name- "Range Rover".
Now they've created something else- a utility vehicle for the city only this time around the marketing guys seem to have lost their nerve when it came to giving the new creation a name.... they took the cheap, coward's way out and decided to cash in on an entirely different franchise.
I'm sure we can do better..... so... here's some suggestions. Please feel free to add your own and if you do better than me, your next teh tarik is on me.
