Going to clean the car and bring some mirror-shine to the metallic paint that has got a little dull for the past 1 year. Have not done any serious polish and wax for 2 years now apart from cleaning with water(I know I'm little pathetic).

Any recommendations on good but cheap clay bar, car polish and wax products that can be easily bought off the shelves in Tesco supermarket?

Clay bar - brand, approx. price
Polish - brand, approx. price
Wax - brand, approx. price

Thanks in advance.

ps. just watched a tutorial video on car detailing. It's so much easier to understand how to detail the car from watching the videos below rather than reading advice from fellow members here on the forum. I hope the method used in the video is correct.

I also would recommend No2. PG claybar

The best and cheapest OTC (over the counter) stuff you can buy in Tesco or Giant would be PermaGlass Polymer Sealant for polish/sealant.

Basically get the whole PG range from car wash, clay and sealant and you will be good to go. Personally interms of OTC in Giant/Tesco its the best from what is on offer.

Next option available would be meguiars products but it'll be expensive in comparison to PG stuff which you can get in Ace hardware. If you are willing to spend money on Meguiars might as well get Duragloss stuff. Much better value for money and performance is excellent. Just visit my blog (in my signature below) and read all about it and see the pics, as I'm testing it now. You can get duragloss stuff from www.duragloss.com.my

I would suggest start with PG stuff first then work your way up from there.

Thanks for the responses, especially vr2turbo who seems to be most helpful responding to most questions posted here by other forummers.

gr88, I am curious about the PG Wonder Clay No. 3 which was described as "Recommended for dull and badly weathered cars". The metallic paint on my car is a light to medium tone grey, and I believe No. 2 will be suitable. However, I wonder what is the difference between No. 2 and No. 3. The clay bar is supposed to pick up dirt. Is No. 3 supposed to pick up more dirt with its stronger cleaning power? How does this affect the surface preparation before receiving the polish and wax? In other words, in what ways will the different clay affect the appearance of the car? Will the car look shinier and mirror-like if using the No. 3? Sorry for these questions as I am quite raw in this.

Thanks for the advice.

Thank you and you are welcome. Just helping where possible..... smile_wink.gif
As for the difference most have already answered to you..... smile_thumbup.gif

Just finished cleaning my car today. However, I skipped the clay bar process as Tesco didn't have the PG Wonder Clay. I just washed the car with a car shampoo and went straight to Soft99 Wax. The car looked a little shinier with a bit of mirror-like finish after applying the Soft99 Wax. Now my car looked better.

My next car wash would probably be 5-6 months from now, and I'll have plenty of time to look for this PG Wonder Clay No. 2.

Cheers.

The difference you will gets with clay, depends on your current surface. Clay removes surface contaminants (rough stuff) stuck on the paint surface. If not too dirty, it will not help with appearance, means after claying may not be shinier then before clay. However it helps to give you a smooth surface, therefore waxing with soft 99 will be easier. Surface will be very mush more smoother/slicker..... smile_thumbup.gif

After 6 months of trial and error, learned tat claying before waxing is extremely important. No amount of good wax will make ur car shine at its best unless the paintwork is free of contaminant.

My steps (do let me know if I can remove or add any process to make my paint shine more)
Step 1
Use Smooth Clay Kit from Macguire (comes with 2 clay bars, Quick Detailer, Microfibre Towel & Ultimate Quick Wax) to clay the paintwork surface while using Quick Detailer as lubricant (which I feel is quite wasting. Subsequently use a large pail of water to constantly keep the clay bar wet). Make sure you clay panel by panel and once done, get a microfibre towel to wipe dry (prevent water spots from forming).

Step 2
Apply a layer of Swirl X (also from Macquire) to minimize the swirl marks

Step 3
Apply a layer of Tech Wax 2.0 for the glossy wet look effect

Step 4
Once done, wash the car again to remove any lose wax and contaminant on the new wax layer. Immediately wipe dry and leave under the sun to dry off

Step 5
Apply a layer of ultimate quick wax to seal in all the good stuff

Last done the above was 2 months ago and the paintwork still have the glossy wet look after a car wash

For your step 2, Swirl X shouldn't be just "apply" like a wax. Swirl X contains micro abrasive that needs to be work on.
If you are not using a machine, ROB or DA; you will need to put in some elbow grease. Else, its just a waste to apply Swirl X and wipe off when it dries.

To me, it is unnecessary to wash the car immediately after waxing; and it is definitely unnecessary to apply a layer of ultimate quick wax just after you've WAX the car.

Ultimate quick wax is meant to be use as a .... quick wax! For those times where you don't want to apply the NXT or any other wax, you would use ultimate quick wax as a booster after a car wash.

For example, some of us wax the car every month some would wax every 3 months.
So in between the scheduled wax interval, we can use a quick wax to maintain the gloss and water beading.

Also, I didn't see any polishing step. You might want to consider adding a polishing / paint cleaning step.
If you are happy with Meg's products, they do have paint cleaners / polishers that you can look at.
Steady but not slow
