now let's compare sonata 2.0 cbu(anyway camry/accord ckd are overpriced) with s40 2.0 ckd, I mean if a cbu sonata 2.0 at 135k is much better price n also good quality (ncap 5 stars...) and a ckd s40 2.0 sellign 169k? dont u think volvo is overpriced? so if they wanna sell more, they know what to do, to me they are selling too high, that's why no voulme and 2nd value drop like hell.
for yr info, i am a ford owner smile_thumbup.gif we are just disccusing the volvo issue here.

dear cruzeon,

i'm not sure how u going to rated YF is 5 star ncap when u only can have 2 air bags for the 2.4 YF highest spec? so do u think 5 stars NCAP stil achievable? smile_question.gif
the same thing happen to the I30 how come it is price close to 115k? for a C-SEG hatch and also acheive 5 star with our version just having 2 airbags?? and not even a leather wrap steering on it smile_question.gif
could u justify that price tag a hatch being 115k where other more establish marque like Ford, Peugeot way better than a low spec I30??so can i said that Hyundai is overpriced or shud i say I30 shud price at least 30k off?? smile_question.gif
tats y i said in MY u cant really compare A to A, there is no clear cut inddication on how the tax structure is being formed..

i would say that YF is a nice car, and hyundai are improving fast on it..no doubt bout it..but in terms of quality, there is still someway to go b4 it could reach the conti level...i would like to say YF in terms of fits/finishing, ride quality is nth coming close to a Volvo S40...just look atthe gadgets S40 gave u, den u'll understand y it is higher priced than a "lite" version of YF smile_blush.gif

again y the C/3 series is being CKD and yet selling at 300k,with the size segment is even smaller than a YF, and yet ppl are dreaming of getting that? and y a CBU lexus IS250 selling the same price cant attract much customer? or shud i say BMW/Merz shud lower their price 50k than a CBU Lexus? i'm sure noone can explain taht, that is the hidden agenda behind that we dunno...u cant really compare it in MY,if u wanna have a fair price, please look into UK market, den u 've got an idea on how they are placed smile_blush.gif

is just like comparing a Samsonite vs Polo, u could say that Polo is larger in size, not too bad quality, and money worth spend, and y Samsonite is way expensive? can anyone answer that?

And btw cruezon,

Volvo resale value is low is simply not bcoz that it's overpriced at first place. It's bcoz the high maintenance cost people are afraid of and popularity play a role too. And why high maintenance cost? Simple, economy of scale as compare to higher volume such as merc and bmw.. Used part or kedai potong parts for volvo is hard to find compare to merc n bmw..

Volvo is very well built compare to merc n bmw. My wife B170 which is more expensive than S40 I'd say is even not as good as S40. The handling is not as good, not even close..50hp lesser.. Lesser air bags.. many electrical probs..sound system is lousy compare to the premium S40 sound system.. Thus, until u have drven a volvo u wouldn't know how good a volvo is.. Comparing volvo with non continental is totally irrelevant.. What richard was saying abt comparing S40 with camry n accord earlier doesn't mean comparing the spec or quality, he was saying that volvo was targeting camry n accord 2.4 buyers with the price of 170k for S40 2.4,commercially luring these buyers into buying S40, which some buyers might consider coz it's a continental..

understanding the malaysian car buyer psyche is important if volvo wants to fish for would-be japanese car buyers.

imho, volvo DOES still have a so-called premium image. therefore they theoretically can price slightly higher than the japanese equivalents (note i said equivalents - will explain later on this). but, as volvo has already fallen out in the fight with bmw and benz, they should price above the japanese but way below the germans. something like the drawing below:

japanese other euro volvo (value proposition) bmw / mercedes (prestige and image)
<-----I-------I------------I--------------------------------------------I---------->

this way, they will present themselves as a viable option for the bmw and benz buyers and at the same time, command interest from the would-be japanese buyers. If priced way above the japanese, the japanese reliability, ease of spare parts, availability of imitation parts will surely keep a japanese car buyer with the japanese. it has to look really enticing for them to go swedish.

as for the equivalents. imho, a japanese car buyer couldn't care less about the little s40 going up against the mighty camry 2.4 or the accord 2.4 because the criteria is to show off. and to show off, normally, the biggest car (sometimes with the most chrome) takes the cake. so, to fight effectively, the models must mirror the japanese classifications more closely. therefore, the s60 is best if the fight is to be taken to the camry due to sizing. i mean, who wouldn't want an s60 that is just above a camry/accord's price? but for an s40 to fight with a japanese d-segment car? only a die hard volvo fan will buy and think it is value but i think the question here is more of conquest sales rather than maintaining right?

and the s40 should really take the fight to the top japanese and europeans in the segment. think the golf, the mazda3, the focus, the 308, the civic, the altis, the lancer. in europe, these are classified in the same segments. again, the same strategy could work. to price slightly above the models i mentioned earlier. and why not? that would make the s40 very enticing indeed. but to do that, they need to have the right pricing straight from sweden and sweden must acknowledge that malaysia is price sensitive in order to provide for preferential pricing here. brand and national pride and ego must take a back seat to sound business decisions. also, margins are to be sacrificed for numbers, with numbers come confidence as more will be seen on the road. once sufficient numbers are there, then slowly go up the price ladder when the brand has once again gained acceptance. without numbers, nobody will notice the brand and it could be only interesting to loyalists... who are fast ageing. to inject younger buyers to the brand, they need a strategy for easy entry. low installment plans, low interest rates cannot help much. younger buyers really need a sticker price low enough to entice them away from the usual suspects.

but, i do not know the workings at volvo malaysia. maybe they are already running on very low margins. maybe they really do not have any budget in malaysia and maybe they are already content with their small marketshare. only they can answer those questions but the fact remains, the brand is not going anywhere fast over here. i certainly do not want volvo to go the same way the other swedish brand here went.
