Dear all,

Detailing to me is to wash my car + polishing/waxing my car. After reading many topic, I started to get confuse between waxing and polishing and MANNNNNNY product that have been offer in the market.

Can sifu out here explain what are the different or the need to apply or simply put, what the hell is all these product???

1. Wax
2. Polish
3. Clay bar
4. Sealant

I have my new Altis, Medium Silver 2 months old. How to make it look "oily" on the surface? it is special wax/polish been use or they have been use all the above chemical to obtain the "wet" or " oily" look? I have seen some product for example Meguir and turtlewax platinum claim to be produce ultra glossy look and i am not sure is it only gimmick? Thanks in advances.

cheers

Got a few question to ask you...

1. Have you EVER detail car before this ? (wax, polish and etc)
2. What product you EVER USED ?
3. What is you FINDING about the product you use (as of user friendly-ness or outcome result)
4. What IS your ESTIMATE/MAX budget you can go for Wax,Polish, Clay Bar & Sealant (exclude shampoo, washmitt, drying towel, microfibre...)

Maintaining a new ride can last longer than you can imagine...after all, with a lot of hard earned money invested in your new ride, it is proper that you maintain your ride to look new as long as possible...
read some of the thread posted here and see the brand you mentioned is gimmick or not?
Rgds.

Brief desciption..
1) Wax & sealant is to add a micro thin layer of protection on your car. Wax & sealant adhere differently to paintwork but provide same purposes.
2) Polish is to remove defects such as stains, oxidation, scratches, water mark by the use of abrasive or chemical cleaner.
3) Clay bar is to remove embedded surface contamination such as rail dust, overspray etc by shearing them off bit by bit.

When to apply..
1) Wax/Sealant- Depend on your routine for e.g whether you wash and wax frequently. Usually 1-3 months once with a durable paste wax like collinite 476 in our humid whether. A general way of indicating when to wax again; If after washing or QDing you find the water hard to sheet off or wipe off.

2) Polish- If your vehicle paintwork is dirty then you need to properly clean it via cleaner wax or mild sbrasive polish so that your wax can adhere properly to the paintwork. As for defects like scratches, swirls, etching mark where abrading of clear coat is required, whether is it neccessary will depends on your expectation of your car.

3) Clay Bar- After washing your car, when you swipe your hand across the paintwork and feels protruding and gritty feel on the surface.

To produce a exceptional look, you need to have a defect free paintwork which may requires all the steps depending on how bad your vehicle is to start with. My observation is usually a defect free paintwork with a 'pure' wax is enough to impress 95% of the masses and not what product is used on your car. Know the procedure and how much you want to commit first, then you will slowly come across the brands you need to serve your routine.

Hi Vios,

There are lots of shops outside charging <RM100 for "Polish & Wax" which is only Paint Cleaning + Sealant/Wax. So to them paint cleaning consider Polish also... Its nothing wrong or right. But to us, paint cleaning, polish, compound are different process... The polish and Compound process will remove those Swirls marks, Scratches, Spider Web.....The Paint Cleaning process will improved the clarity of your paint.

But since your ride is silver and still new, I dun think u need to go thru the Polish and Compound process. Prepared NOW for a correct Washing Method then protects and your ride will have fewer swirls which also will prolong your paint life span.

what i did for my friend 1 day old accord lasttime was WASH > Clay (to see how dirty is the paint since god knows how long the car been keep/park/exposed to sun/acid rain/dust before delivery...

Well, clay bar turn up to be brilliant clean, and i hardly see any swirl, so just did a light round of ROB with D151 follow by 1000P or M16 (can't recall)...

Interior was threaded with M40, engine bay with HDressing.

I think bro. dschia explanation is quite detail, but let me put it in order.
The steps should be:-
1. Clay Bar
2. Polish
3. Sealant/Wax

Judge the condition of your paint to see what is required to do. Say if there are no surface contaminants then skip 1. Clay Bar
Since you car is already 2 months old some contaminants may have already stuck on.
If not, a polish is required. The polishing mention is more towards paint cleaner to get the clarity.

Sealant/Wax depends on what you want. Some apply both sealant and follow up with wax as some prefer the gloss of wax, however nowadays some sealant also have this gloss, therefore it all depends again on the products used.

Follow up method on washing and accessories used as mention by bro. mubull is also another important factor to keep the paint in good condition....
