hi. im new here and don't have enough knowledge with 940 models range.

on behalf of my dad,he's looking for 940.he sold his merc benz 230E
(W123)...and want to get 940.it's quite cheap nowadays.

in what area the 940 really shines? how about the ride quality?how about
performance? how about the body built quality?i wish a volvo is as robust
as a merc benz.i understand that 940 is not great to drive/handle,but i
do believe that it's a comfortable car.better to opt for turbo version or
n/a?

kindly..could anyone explain some simple specs of the turbo and n/a 940
engine...like cc,number of cylinders, how many valves and bhp rating for
both.

thank u for any help.

You've come to the right place. All the informaiton you need has been
discussed thoroughly in this forum. If you use the advanced search at the
bottom of this page and type in 940 for the search, you'll find pages of
postings mentioning the 940.

Basically where are you from ? If you're in KL, there are alot of 940
owners associated with this forum and VOCM who can provide you a first
hand experience on the 940. Try to attend one of those teh tarik (TT)
sessions with them in Bandar Utama. To give you some answers to your
question (but non exhaustive) :
1) Price range : $25k to $52k, so some are not so cheap
2) You have to like Volvo to own one and not many falls into this category
3) Ride quality - very good
4) Perormance - good, can beat the 230E, E230 easily
5) Body built - very good but slightly softer than the Merz 123 and Volvo
240 but it's for impact absorbing during collision.
6) Robust - yes for the engine components. The Merz 123 leaks more than
the 940. Interior also not too bad.
7) Go for the Turbo versions
8) Turbo specs : Full=170 BHP 200km/h, LPT=163 BHP 180km/h
9) NA specs : 8Valves = 130 BHP, 16Valves = 160 BHP
9) Engine : 2.3 litre, cylinders 4, Valves 8

glock19,
Isn't the LPT 940 only 135 HP.
The NA 940 is 114 HP. ( 8 valve)

Or am I mistaken.

thank u for replies.
thank u for the specs.

actually...my dad really in love with 940aand seriously want to get
one.he's keep searching in newspapers advert to get the best value for
money from the 940.
we are from kelantan...overhere not many 940.so got to go to kl.my dad is
looking for late 1993 to early 1994...can get within rm 35 000 price?

i advise him to get the light pressure turbo.i think the n/a quite
underpowered to move the big 940.(im his driver..so that's why i want
turbo version.more pleasure to drive).

guys...compare 940 to merc benz 230E(W124),which has better&smoother
ride? 940 is superior in cabin space compared to benz 230E(W124) i guess.

thank u.

smoother ride? go for 940. I've been in both models before. Yeap, cabin
space is also 940 better.

But personally, both is good car. Tough and durable.

Just my 2 cent opinion.

Ciao

mm...for a '94 it is around RM 35 K or so...depends on the condition i
guess... anyway, buy it. it's a great car and there shouldnt be any problem
using it within the next 10 years... it's smooth, enough power and quite ok
to maintain (except the fuel...because of the 2.3L) anyway, it's worth
every penny spent... :D

Clorox,
welcome to the club- I would agree with everything said so far - As for me
safety was a consideration so I went for the 97 model with ABS and
airbags - in the market currently good stuffs for 45-48K - check this
week's Star classified KL version if possible ( Kelantan may have
different version ) so the net version may be better www.thestar.com.my -
there was one GLE 97, 1 owner, metallic, acc free low mileage 48.8k Wayne
0123838076 (repeating the ad for your benefit only ok I have not checked
the ad and dunno the person) - things that will definitely need close look
will be the usual brakes, absorbers, oil leak etc- otherwise if well kept
the interior, body should still be quite beautiful
The rest of the models (95, 96) all ok ( I took a look at a few) and the
price is very worth it if you dun want the air bags and ABS - just take
off about 5-7 K for every year lower e.g 95= 35-38k

I also brought mine to Federal Auto for them to check before I bought mine
(their pple can also source for a car for you but very high price)

anyway happy hunting

oh one more thing - soft turbo is definitely worth it - performance and
drive is much better and can get that oomph when you need it
Handling for such a big car is very good ( even my wife now is so
comfortable driving it in town ok !) KL/ PJ roads are a pain to drive in
any case
Lastly there was something about leather or fabric seats version - can't
remember the previous advice I got but the conclusion was to get the
fabric seats - that again depend on your taste
And a big YES on comfort - during the holidays travelling with some
relatives and comfort choosing between the Merc and Volvo was definitely
Volvo ( for the back seat passengers )

buzzvic, are you refering to the twin-cam version? That's a problematic
engine but more powerful.
