I believe that Shell V Power has just the same octane rating as any other
brand out there..ie,95 Octane. In Europe they have introduced Shell V
Power Racing in some countries, notably Germany and Hungry..V Power Racing
has an octane rating of 99.

Shell like to add to the confusion as V Power normal as we know it has an
octane rating of 93 in America..so they play the game on market demand by
the look of it.

I have not even seen V Power in the Uk ,the garage down the road from
where I am at at the moment sells Optimax, which is probably the same
stuff..octane rating I dont know but its marketed at 97RON

Bro Kaminski,

In the country, all the brand petrol marketed with RON index to give
impression that the octane is high. In USA or Europe they use average
octane rating, since there are actually two types index which are RON
(Road Octane Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number). MON index has
basically 10 point lower than RON. The difference between RON and MON is
called "Sensitivity". Why (RON – MON) is called sensitivity ?

Because the two test methods use different test conditions, especially
the intake mixture temperatures and engine speeds, then a fuel that is
sensitive to changes in operating conditions will have a larger
difference between the two rating methods. Modern fuels typically have
sensitivities around 10. The US 87 (RON+MON)/2 unleaded gasoline is
recommended to have a 82+ MON, thus preventing very high sensitivity
fuels. Recent changes in European gasoline has caused concern, as high
sensitivity unleaded fuels have been found that fail to meet the 85 MON
requirement of the EN228 European gasoline specification.

For example, if a brand of petrol has 97 RON, its MON is 87, then the
octane rating is (RON + MON)/2, which is only 92, called as "Pump Octane"
or "Antiknock Index".

The question is, what does the MON and RON measure ?

1. Motor Octane Number (MON)

The conditions of the Motor method represent severe, sustained high
speed, high load driving. For most hydrocarbon fuels, including those
with either lead or oxygenates, the motor octane number (MON) will be
lower than the research octane number (RON).

Test Engine conditions Motor Octane
Test Method ASTM D2700-92 [104]
Engine Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR)
Engine RPM 900 RPM
Intake air temperature 38 C
Intake air humidity 3.56 - 7.12 g H2O / kg dry air
Intake mixture temperature 149 C
Coolant temperature 100 C
Oil Temperature 57 C
Ignition Advance - variable Varies with compression ratio
(eg 14 - 26 degrees BTDC)
Carburettor Venturi 14.3 mm

2. Road Octane Number (RON)

The Research method settings represent typical mild driving, without
consistent heavy loads on the engine.

Test Engine conditions Research Octane
Test Method ASTM D2699-92 [105]
Engine Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR)
Engine RPM 600 RPM
Intake air temperature Varies with barometric pressure
(eg 88kPa = 19.4C, 101.6kPa = 52.2C)
Intake air humidity 0 g H2O / kg dry air
Intake mixture temperature Not specified
Coolant temperature 100 C
Oil Temperature 57 C
Ignition Advance - fixed 13 degrees BTDC
Carburettor Venturi Set according to engine altitude
(eg 0-500m=14.3mm, 500-1000m=15.1mm)

Formula 1 allows 102 RON, means only 98 Octane Rating, 1 point lower than
Germany Power Racing Octane Requirement (99) as you cited above.

Bro Razibar,

What I cited above regarding the Octane Requirement are based on RON
index, bcoz Malaysia uses RON. When convert to actual Octan Rating, then

Compression Ratio - 5:1 Octane Rating 67
Compression Ratio - 6:1 Octane Rating 76
Compression Ratio - 7:1 Octane Rating 82
Compression Ratio - 8:1 Octane Rating 87
Compression Ratio - 9:1 Octane Rating 91
Compression Ratio - 10:1 Octane Rating 95
Compression Ratio - 11:1 Octane Rating 99
Compression Ratio - 12:1 Octane Rating 103

As I said, on modern engines with sophisticated Engine Management
Systems, the engine can operate efficiently on fuels of a wider range of
octane rating, but there remains an optimum octane for the engine under
specific driving conditions.

For your case with Altis 1.8 having 10:1 CR, you shall use 95 Octane
Rating (100 RON) to get optimum Performance (Power) on your Altis. If you
use Octane Rating lower than the optimum octane requirement for 10:1 CR,
hence you get less power (Under Power), but your EMS still accomodate the
Octane Petrol you use.

If Shell Yellow has 97RON, and if it is true, than Shell Blue (V-Power)
should have higher RON, but how far, don't know.

For your S40 2.4i with 10.3:1 CR, you should use higher octane rating to
get optimum power, but can not find in the country. If let say V-power
has 100RON (95 Octane Rating), you still need a bit higher octane rating.
You might try (not recommendation) V-power plus Octane Booster.

Just to remind you, even two brands of petrols have same RON, but
different nature (composition) of additive, giving different response on
your engine. So Shell Yellow 97RON and CALTEX 97RON, will give different
response to your engine and you feel better response with Caltex 97RON.
Other engine response differently, might be Shell Yellow 97RON gives
better response than Caltex 97RON.

As Bro Kaminski mentioned, V-power in USA has only 93 Octane Rating,
equivalent to 98RON, only 1 point greater on RON but 16 sen more
expensive than normal 97RON.

Some engine response better when using V-power, and some got no
difference. So EMS mapping play an important role, so that is why so many
motorist change their stock chip to superchip, something like that laaah.
Not only cover for wide-range of octane rating but also other refine
parameters, such as RPM mapping, Lambda Sensor mapping, Engine Load
mapping ... etc ... etc.

FYI from the Shell website.

What is the octane rating of Shell V-Power?

The Research Octane Number (RON) is 97.0 minimum ...

From the Shell S'pore website:

What is the octane rating of Shell V-Power?

In Singapore, Shell V-Power has been designed to deliver maximum power
and responsiveness with Research Octane Number (RON) of 98, so that all
cars can benefit from it.

Vol940,
Great stuff Bro. My S70 is running smoother with V-Power although not
alot more powerful. Since my employer is paying for petrol, I'll be
enjoying the smoothness until I start paying for it.Wink
Am going to try V-Power on my X-Trail and see the effects.
