clearence
as to land rover, all models EXCEPT rr3, disco3 and freelander is using
live axle. and pick up bodies is the most widely avilable (ex-police)

Wah someone wanna go portal axles. Keke...
Well as for the hummer they dont have a portal axle in the sense of a solid
axle unimog or volvo c303.
Instead it runs a simple swing suspension. That means 1 lower arm and thats
it. Together it runs reduction gear hubs.
Correct me if i'm wrong.
Someone mentioned that in Oz the Prados get a solid axle front as an
option. I dont think so. I think its only the 100series Land Cruisers that
get that option.

When we mention Volvo axles we are refering to the Volvo C303, C304 that
runs a unique axle thats offset by running reduction gearhubs. The idea
is so that u get more ground clearance where the lowest point is the diff
housing. At the same time u get better gear reduction. The best is to do
a web search on portal alxes, Merc Unimog and Volvo C303.
Live, solid axle is the just one simple dead axle. Just look behind most
trucks for an example.
IFS, independant front suspension. Newer SUVs these days tend to run this
setup such as the Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Mitsu Storm. Normally
they run a wishbone suspension which consist of 2 arms and runs either a
torsion bar or a typical spring.
U should try checking out www.howstuffworks.com

as you can see, to the untrained eyes, volvo axle is quite difficult to
differentiate with normal soild/live axle. in this picture, this LR series
3 is fitted with volvo axle both at the front and back. it is quite
difficult to see at the front axle because its partly hidden by steering
parts. if you see at the rear axle, you can notice that the axle tub is at
the top of the wheel hub, not at the centre of the wheel hub like normal
live axle, thus giving extra clearence to the diff housing (labu). how to
differentiate if you are looking from the side? you can see that the rim
have 8 bolts, not 5 or 6 like normal rim. I would say that almost all if
not all volvo axle are using this same type and same shape of rim.
