I would prefer a B series engine over a mitsu engine, turbo or N/A. Less headache to run it compare to a turbo and more power compare to a stock NA.

A vtec is almost bullet proof when it's stock. But then again, so is a Mitsu turbo. Actually besides gwailo cars, most stock cars are pretty reliable if you leave them stock.

It's when you modify that all the headaches crop up. And I'm not talking of changing air filters and exhausts, plugs and cables etc.

I've seen lots of overboosted turbo engines die from overwhelmed internals. And an equal number of overheating Vtecs due to metal head gaskets springing leaks & suffering from high compression issues or blown engines due to overbored blocks (especially the 2.0 and 2.2 kits).

i bring this issue out cos seen lotsa tapR here in my place bullying those 1.8 proton putra, gti or wira...

have seen one putra from KL here challenge the ek3 b18c tapR although lose by a car length but it was good enough to scared the tapR owner...

THe fact is both the Vtec and mitus turbo are reliable when its stock, but being a turbo engine, it need more care and maintenance compare to a vtec. Thats what I meant when I say headache. Vtec can be driven at a moderate pace, thus save petrol as well, but with turbo the savings are not much. Hope it will clear all the confusion.

Then again, Vtec does not have the turbo kick, so you cant have the best in both world. Or can you?

Actually that's a misconception plain and simple. Read the mfr handbooks, and you'll find that the care and maintenance are not much different. Ask owners of NEW stock turbos, and NEW stock vtecs, you'll find that their problems are much the same.

Firstly, the fact is that turbo cars in Malaysia are generally from relatively old halfcuts. The VR4s are easily 10-15 years old. The GSRs are a little better being a few years younger. Vtecs are relatively newer.

Secondly, most turbos in Malaysia are "the cheaper the better" jobs. Maklumlah... most turbos find their way into Protons. If Proton drivers had a lot of money to buy cars, they wouldn't have bought Protons in the first place. Realising that I'm generalising, I would say that you can expect Proton drivers to spend less on the conversion & to maintain their cars - compared to Honda drivers. Where else can you find people plunking in 10+yr old engines without so much as a change of timing belt, piston rings and oil seals? That's where those RM3000 VR4 conversions come from. Easy come, easy blow.

As for mileage, no point simply comparing vtecs and turbos. Most vtecs are 1.6, but most turbos are 2.0. You need to compare the same cc, like a 2.0 DOHC Vtec and a 2.0 turbo, and you'll find that the mileage can be very crappy for both. Or compare hp, a 200hp Vtec with a 200hp turbo.

When a turbo is driven moderately too, the fuel consumption is not half bad!

Okay, so maintenance for new stock NA and new stock turbo is almost the same. All these while I thought that the turbo needs more TLC Big Smile Let the turbo cool down before switching off engine after a hard drive, etc. More gadgets too. More running and moving parts more maintenance.

Its cheaper to change the timing belts, bearings, seals, hoses and mountings when dong the conversion. No need to pay for extra workmanship compare to changing it next time. Cheaper in the long run. Why dont they think of that?

Cant we compare the B18 (1.8Vtec) to the 4g93T? Cant think of other engines or cars to compare thats fair to both. JDM Accord, Integras, EVOs.

Your input is much appreciated.
