This one is a bit of a theoretical question; can you buy crate motors in Malaysia and is it legal to put a different engine in the car?

As far as I know you can use different engines but the mounting points must be the same. No modifications of the mounting points are allowed.
Therefore in this aspect usually car of same make it is possible to change the engine but not engine of another make where the mounting points are different

But now a day, many manufacturers had share their R&D and also production with many other makers especially on engine design, just example of the famous Prince engine been share among BMW Mini, Peugeot, Citroen... so can these cars switch engine from their counterparts ?

As long as the engine mountings are the same and not altered. Just like Mitsu engine going into proton cars are allowed

It was for an old car I was looking at. It had a 2.6l engine that produced around 100hp. Slow and thirsty.
