What is the maintenance cost are we looking at?

A budget of 5k per year enough ? - let's say if I am buying a 2005 S40 2.4i today.

Or it needs to be higher?

sean,
i drive an s60 2.0t 2003. there are years where i only change the engine oil, oil filter, maybe spark plugs - bill at about RM28 for oil filter, RM50 per spark plug original Volvo (total cost depends on your model - s40 is 2.45 cylinder) you may also opt for Bosch which is cheaper or the the expensive platinum range. engine oil - cost depends on your choice of oil. I use pennzoil full syntehetic at RM130/4 litre can. I need 6 litres, so i need to buy 2 cans but with a spare of 2 litre.
so your cost (based on mine is :
a) engine oil - RM130 x 2can = rm260, since i use 6 litre, my cost is rm195
cool.gif oil filter = rm28
c) spark plugs = rm50 x 5 = rm250
d) labour = depends on your choice, from rm 10 for 3 simple things ? make it rm50 for convenience
total cost = rm523 per 10k km.

I have also experienced times where i changed all these at the same time :
a) 2 front absorbers (sach) at rm420 x 2 = RM840
cool.gif absorber mountings = rm85 x 2 (lemforder - a german oem brand, ori at rm135/pc) = rm170
c) 4 pc lower arm bush - rm130 per side x 2 = rm 260 (lemforder as well)
d) front anti-roll bar = rm500 (ori volvo)
e) labour was abt 80 for a & b, 150 for c (includes hydraulic pump-in bush) and 200 for d = rm450
making it rm2,220 for this job
most sedans S series have about similar price-ranged parts, also note as currency fluctuations.

what if u have to change all 4 absorbers ? and you prefer original volvo abs at abt RM1k per piece (labour at authorised centre differ from outside specialists). the xc models are slightly more expensive to maintain

But if you have set aside 5k every year for maintenance only, and your mileage is about 20k per year, then you are alright provided you are getting a well-maintained major-accident-free car. At the end of the day, a volvo is also only a car to get you from point A to B. driving a myvi also gets you to point B.

Test drive,m send to specialist & do a full diagnostic test to check for possible malfunctioning parts at Clear Marque or Fed Auto (need appt for this) at RM180 with printout. then only make your decision.

Happy decision making
Kenny
