Guys, has anyone ever sterilized their car cabin? No, I am not talking merely about washing the car carpets, cleaning the car seats, and car interior -- but methods to really, really sterilize the car cabin which includes sterilizing the car air con system.

What DIY methods are available?

By "sterilizing", i think you mean killing bacteria and general dis-infection. Many owners will send the vehicle for "fogging" where the mschine simply vaporizes a disinfectant into fumes that'll flood entire vehicle. This get sucked into the a/c system as well.

As for DIY, there are various methods. You can buy an odourless enzyme-based disinfectant (from any pet shops), and spray it on your carpets and other interior surfaces. Harmless, odourless. Kills bacteria and odours. Chemical-free and water based. Try the huge pet centre on top floor of Ikano Power Centre, PJ.

An alternative DIY method is to use Lysol or similar products although i'll never trust such products on plastic surfaces cos most of em are alcohol/ethanol based.

As for your a/c, if u wanna DIY, id be careful cos many owners sprayed Lysol and other stuff into the airvents, and some ended up experiencing a bad odour the next day.

Another quick DIY method is to use a "smoke bomb" that releases either faint "smoke" or a fine mist into car interior. The Carmate ones are available in ENEOS, while ive seen an aerosol one by Liqui Moly (German). But beware...they can leave a "chlorine-like" odour that lingers for 24hrs after use.

Ah yes, seen those "smoke bombs", but they are selling scented ones now, maybe to prevent that chlorine after smell.

Theres still a slight chlorine/bleach stench even for those scented ones. Leave yer doors open for an hour after treatment. Great for cigarette smoke odors.

There are those ozone type sterilizers/odor removal machines too right?

If it kills bacteria it is not harmless, right? Maybe the dosage not strong to harm human but still I think better to air the car after doing the disinfecting. In enclosed area and breathing on long run not sure if it is good. Even now air fresheners are deemed to be a health hazard.... smile_shock.gif

They have been for a long time already...most of them produce fumes which are hazardous for prolong exposure/inhalation. It's just that the manufacturers/brands 'forgot' to mention this, so the businessmen took advantage to make loads of profit from public ignorance.
