2012 Focus Gearbox Grinding Sound

My 2 weeks old focus have the gearbox grinding sound especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear to 3rd. Steering rack or maybe the front absorber also making noise. I have not sent to service center to check yet though but want to check if any of the forumer also experience the same problem. I just realize about it when I drove it today as my wife is the main driver.

yes, i consider gearbox grinding sound is the charateristics of Ford Focus DCT. But dont worry about that, it will diasppear "when your know/get used to the responsive of new FOFO DCT"; or your FoFo sudah faham your driving behaviour.
english not good, simple word : you should not notice this anymore after 2000km or lesser.

Steering rack noise. I dont encounter it. But better send to SC for checking as some owners are facing similiar problem.

With the 2 issues you have, gearbox grinding and either steering or absorber noise, I think it warrants going into the service centre to check it out since it is a new car.

I own the Smax and Fiesta, both of which uses the power shift transmission. I did not encounter any gearbox grinding for the past 1.5 yrs.

Also, when speaking to my SA recently, he mentioned to me that they had quite a few cases of gearbox problems for the Fiesta. But so far he said luckily Ford Focus no issue.

But I think better ne safe than sorry, get it in to be checked out. If you read some of the horror stories of VW DSG failures, I think you will definitely be more confident if you get it checked out rather than not knowing.

I took my Focus to the service center. The gearbox grinding sounds cannot be emulated lately. Only about 10% of the time it happens. The mechanic told me that it is a common problem for the transmission but my S-max did not have the problem.

For the tuk tuk sound on the wheel, they say is the absorber. They promised to fix for me but today they cannot do it. I need to make another appointment. It needs loger time to fix it.

S max is using wet Powershift clutch so it could be the lub helps lessen the grinding effect. While Focus is using dry version. As the FF FB mention....to let it run in for another 3000km and see if is still grinding.

If dry gearbox, then it is quite similiar to VW DSG-7 DQ200 Dry concept, hopefully does not get the same infection from there.

I sent my Focus to check on the gearbox sound, SA said it is the clutch problem cannot be fix. But it is getting less nowadays. Not sure if the clutch wears a bit will have less sound. I asked for a change but the SA said that he changed before but still sounds.

The absorber sound, they said it is not the absorber and they do not know what it is and cannot be fix also... So, what can I do now? They said wait for recall. They are still trying to find the root cause.

The car drives well but the clutch sound (About 10% of the time) and the tuk tuk sound from the wheel are annoying. My Nissan Sentra used to have this problem and it was because of the brake caliper that is loosen. Maybe next time I tell them to check that.

Hi, have the same grinding gearbox noises, especially when moving slow. Lodged to ford n had done a software update 2 wks ago. But i still have same prob n jerkiness... Just wait n see. My mileage was ard 2k when i did the update.

I have reach 2.5K km mileage now and the grinding sound is getting lesser but still sometimes when I thought it is gone, it came back to once a while. I hope when the clutch wears off a bit more, the sound will be gone.

I think you guys are talking about the clunkiness of the gearbox at low speed and stop/start situations. My car has it too. Same goes with the Fiesta which has the same gearbox.

There are two things to consider 1) the computer software that commands and controls the gearbox and 2) the mechanicals of the gearbox itself. The command signal from the computer is fast, too fast for the mechanical gearbox to react to due to its inertia/mass. It is mechatronics and the mecha must work in tandem with the tronics. In this case it is not working too well. This is my layman's interpretation.

I read on other forums that there is a software update available to lessen the clunkiness.
