One of Pakatan Rakyat's election promises is to dismantle the AES network, which I must admit to welcome with arms wide open.

My opinion on speed cameras is well-known and discussed to death, but I have a less hostile attitude towards red light cameras, though I maintain that any camera-enforced traffic light must be accompanied by a countdown timer visible from afar.

Critics of enforcement cameras question the overall credibility of the system, and the cynics even go as far as saying that they are blatant money making schemes. These arguments are not new, and they have surfaced in every country where automated enforcement cameras are present.

The following article gives us an American perspective.

Why do you support dismantling AES but not red light cameras?

Yup! I also agree with that why are you not supporting red light camera?? 689.gif

There are mixed views on this. Yes, it is to deter speeders, but is that the only thing that our authorities are to be worried about? How about the numerous bad roads throughout the country that badly need resurfacing/repairing? How about the bad signboards, such as those that are hidden or obscurred by low-hanging branches? If the AES is used to treat the occasional speeder like a criminal, then no one should be buying the high-powered cars or even superbikes!! Let's try riding a superbike at 90km/hr for an extended period of time!! Beter to get a C70....it would feel fast and still be legal at those speeds!!

You are looking for a perfect system but none exist on earth so what do you do? All system is a compromise, for example, may be a teenager driver should only drive 60 kph and a skilled driver like yourself can safely drive 120 kph so compromise at 90 kph. May be this is the reason why you oppose because you wanted to drive at 120 kph but then you forgot about that teenager driver who is also out there driving.

IMO, we should not throw out AES because doing so is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Like any system, there are areas that could be improved for example, re-look at the speed limit on some roads etc.

Having said all that, I think the perfect system would be a viarable system.
1. If a driver is skilled instead of a novice, allow him to drive faster.
2. If the car is a BMW with great handling and braking system instead of a poorly maintained Kancil, allow to drive faster.
3. If road condition is good, no rain and stars all properly aligned with driver's horscope, allow to drive faster.
I don't think there is a system smart enough to implement that
I prefers to use my head than follow the crowd. After all, it is my money and not theirs.
