Hi guys! wow this is a very long thread about the AL4 giving flashing lights and problems.

Well, I've dismantled my AL4 hydraulic valve block and put it back together. Read it here: http://my206xr.blogs...alve-block.html

What I can tell you is that:

1. Don't ever drive the 206 into deep water, especially in heavy rain, else you'll end up with water in the gear box.
2. Change the ATF, like every few thousand km. This is Malaysia and the hot weather is bad for the ATF.
3. Use only GENUINE PEUGEOT ATF (ESSO ATF 4HP20 AL4).

It seems a lot of ppl here like to cut and paste information from the internet and post it here as fact. Please please share personal factual experiences instead, which is more useful.

Salute your skills!

Wow what a long thread!

Well my AL4 box is dying too... There's this buzzing sound coming from the gearbox for months now, and it sure sounds like the solenoid valves. Few days ago, the lockup valve died twice on two different days.

How do I know it was the lockup valve? Well, when it died, the buzzing disappeared, but gears still changed from 1 to 2 and 3 only without torque coverter lockup when 2nd gear is engaged. So my second gear was spinning high rpm before going into 3rd. The snow/sport lamps didn't flash though, which is weird.

Anyway restarting the car gets the gearbox to normal operating condition but with the buzzing solenoid alive again. I hope it stays alive until I receive a new pair of Borg Warner solenoids, whic I plan to install and then update the ECU.

Same goes with me.
I will get a loud crack sound and a jump (as if I shifted wrong gear) once daily, with the Snow and Sport mode flashing, Faulty Gearbox sign, and the typical humming sound. I will be sending my car to the SC (3rd time) to get this fixed as it is still under warranty.

During the error, if I stick to slow speed, gentle driving, it is fine. But if I push it hard, the RPM will go screaming high with no power.

No need to change the ATF too early. My206B already clocked more than 50,000km after 3yrs . For instance My405 ATx [non AL4 of course] already run over 100,000km since the last ATF change 6+ yrs ago!. Still OK. I'll run 206B till 100,000km before replacing the ATF. I'll tell if there is any problem. Yes I'd [and will] test it myself before giving advice.

The engine will not die running on that mode as long as u don't exceed recommended speed. I could ram the car up to 120km/hr still no problem. [normally on 3rd can go up to 150+km/hr]

Don't worry too much. As pointed by Andy, most likely its due to the solenoid valve [or actuator]. If the car is below 3yrs [and clocked less than 100,000km] it can be replaced foc. I faced the same problem and the valve was replaced - no question asked. Of course NOT at Glenmarie. . Already 'tested' THREE counts of warranty claims there but nothing was done. Found a better place - probably the best authorised SC in town... smile_thumbup.gif

p/s Well perhaps we can sort out the facts from the many motoring fallacies. And yet despite all this common sense and pragmatism, the motoring world is beset with myths and misapprehensions.

Which SC is that? I'm fedup with GelapMari, twice my car was sent there but they didnt fix the AL4 issue, just reset. Problem came back the next day straight away.

My 407 also facing the same problem lately.. really hated it the most plus i did experience power loss during the cruising as well.. then was poisoned by my colleague to replace it with Skoda octavia.. in fact i did went to test drive..

haven't give up with my pug as i has sentimental value for me, yesterday i went to Pak Ya..diagnosed came out with "incoherent between 2 switches".. i don't know what he did, touching the cables on driver's and passenger side...voila~, drove it soooo smooothhhh on the way back to office...this morning also, no jerking and power lost during my drive to office..

Hi all,

Luckily...Old thread come alive...
Just to get some input as I believe I'm facing issues with gear stuck in 3rd...
Sport and Snow lights coming on...
The info here has been invaluable in helping to diagnose my issue/s with my 206.

Can any SiFu/s chip in regards to how much it'll cost now to change the solenoid? or just do the she-bang...
change ATF, servicing etc?

I'm not a sifu on AL4 gearbox. However with your problem I doubt a she-bang job will work,if it works,it'll only be temporary. Best to do a complete strip and fix job.

GelapMari changed the solenoid and ATF fluid, about RM300 but claimed under warranty.
After that, the car has been running smooth.

Is it true that the newer models like 308 VTi and the 208 are using the improved version of AL4?
Less headache now?
