It really depends on what you need. If you want a reliable car who always get the job done with cheap and many readily available spare parts then get the Hilux. As I always and will always say, you can never go wrong with a Hilux. It's reputation for reliability spanned over few decades. Hilux is underpowered but no longer since the upgrade to VNT Intercooler. It now pushes out 343Nm and 144PS, 7Nm less than the close rival Triton. The upcoming Dmax will get 320Nm version for 2.5L VGT.
Ford Ranger is a better car if you compare paper specifications. It's a new truck with new engine, gearbox and chasis. It gives more power, has 6 speed gearbox and an overall better truck. The only thing Ranger is at disadvantage is it's reliability which is unproven. It takes time to prove how reliable it is. You won't want to spend 95k on a car only to get a problematic car do you?
So its all about your preferences. Hilux is old and it's replacement is due in 2015/2016. UMW probably bring it end 2016 or beginning 2017. But it's reliable. Get the job done. The 2.2L ranger is new boy but a potential boy. See you dare to try it or not only.
For road tax arguement sake, 2.2L is cheaper than 2.5L but remember the 2.2L takes 8.6 liters of engine oil compared to 6.5 in Hilux. An additional 2 liters. The gap the road tax is mere rm200+.
netsoft,
I doubt you have even maintained the Ranger before. Fyi, the Ford Ranger has proven reliability and durability close to Toyota. Few old Rangers clocking over 500,000km with little maintenance changing oil + filter at interval with some parts broken, it is still running, engine bay not much leakage yet could still ferry cargo and take more punishment.
There's once engine could still run without blowing a hole with the radiator broken without coolant driving to destination for repair while needle pointing red Hot. Spare parts wise, no problem at all, I could easily get cheap parts from suppliers. Only weakness in old Ranger is the smaller and weaker old frame.
Majority went for Hilux mainly because of its fame for reliability in cars but when comes to diesel engine technology, Toyota is infact behind most competitors but people just don't know this. Yes, it has VGT now as standard but still it's a weaker pickup in VGT trucks category. If compare the Hilux with old Ranger 08, Frontier, D-Max, Storm, it has better frame.
However, if compare to newer trucks like Triton, Navara, new Ranger, BT50, Colorado, new D-Max, it is the weakest in pulling power, frame, handling and cargo. Triton VGT will soon lower its price to compete, when it sees Hilux VGT sold at lower price. If compared Hilux vs new Ranger, not only on specs, even in actual, the Ranger wins.
Only weakness in new Ranger is its 2.2L engine below 1500rpm without turbocharger assist is weak to pull its 2tonne body. Overall, the new Ranger beats the Hilux in actual result. I doubt your calculation is even correct, 2.2L engine takes more engine oil than 2.5L? Do you mean the cylinder block for 2.2L is bigger than 2.5L? First time I heard. How about FC comparison?
Yes, SUV, jeeps and pickup trucks are not designed to take sharp corner at the max speed of a car could turn without losing control. If a proper handling sedan could take sharp corner at 100km/h without losing control, the pickup truck with proper handling is not guaranteed that it could do the same. Professional race car drivers would not even dare to drive proper SUV with good handling to turn as fast as they would do in sedan cars because they know the height could not compromise the hard corner at that speed.
Beefburger,
Taliban has optional pickup trucks as Afghanistan almost severed ties to outside world during its reign therefore, they don't have any other pickup trucks other than Toyota. Look at Libyan freedom fighters instead. They turn to Triton, Ranger and D-Max turning them into technicals mounted with machine guns more than Hilux and Frontier. They know which trucks good as they can't risk to have their trucks stalled on middle of desert.
If you wanted descent handling, interior space, small turning circle with proper pulling power, wait for the Triton VGT to lower selling price. If you can't wait, I would suggest Ranger 2.2L. Spare parts wise for these 2, you could get from spare part suppliers if you want cheaper price and get sub-franchised SC to fit for you without getting warranty void, check first whether they are willing to do it for you. Talking about buying parts from SC, there is not much difference between Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford as they all markup high on parts and labour. As long as there are large numbers of buyers, SC and spare part supply chain would always order parts in bulk to sell at cheaper price.

Jayraptor,
I appreciate your comments on the Ranger and thank for sharing with me the maintenance costs of the old Ranger. I have not maintain a Ranger before but I do know the old Ranger is very reliable. But that is with old engine. The new Ranger is using new engine and a new gearbox, how can we gauge if these stuff will not fall apart?
FYI, Hilux may not be the worst. The new upcoming D-max may push 2.5L VGT to 320Nm only. We will not get the 400Nm version that European countries are getting (bi-turbo diesel) due to our poor diesel quality.
I have done my research on Ranger in anticipating of buying one but have to put on hold over some problems.
Service cost of first 10k Service Interval. You can see it uses 8.6 Litres of engine oil. Yes, something is wrong right? 2.2 using more engine oil than 2.5! SDAC cannot provide good answer to this.
Latest is they charge RM 50 per litre, but still quite expensive. Remember first 3 service is free labour.
Secondly, rusty fuel injectors. Some Rangers affected. SC still does not have answer to solve this.
Third, gear shift jerky. Fourth turbo lag <- Apparent for early acceleration after speed bump.
And lastly, don't know if this is an isolated issue:
Still awaiting answer.
I am not a Hilux fan or intended to buy one but I give credit to where it is due. In this case, a reliable pick-up and workhorse - definitely Hilux.

The SA at Ford PJ said that the engine oil is RM30 per litre!
