'05 Altis 1.8g Gear Shift Problem

Hello fellow Toyota gang,
Yesterday my old ride an '05 Altis gear lever got stuck, can't shift from N to D. Brought the car to Service center in Penang and was told that a rubber inside the gear shift assy was broken. The sad thing is that, the rubber is not replaceable and the whole assy need to be replace. It will cost about 3.6K (part only) to replace the assy. Infact, the guy told me that this is a common problem for 1.8 altis, it is a wear and tear part. This is stupid isn't it? just a rubber broken whole assy needs to be replace. It is just like brake pad worn out the whole brake assy needs tobe replace.

I was told that the rubber act as a cushion between the gear lever and the plastic part around it. Without the rubber, the gear lever will touch again the crome plastic part that indicate the gear position. Nothing more, nothing less and everyhting else remains the same.

I'm sure someone in this forum encountered this before and I hope to get some advise/help.
1) Anyway to modify it, like adding "other" rubber cushion? may be from other car model/make.
2) Anywhere to buy cheaper replacement part? I asked few potong kereta shop, and they don't has it. They claim they only keep imported car spare part. Altis to them is a local car, only sell in this asean region. But if you guys aware of any shope selling the part new/used/potong please let me know.

I'm guessing your problem is the piece of rubber that slides together with the gated shifter and somehow it has dislocated or has broken causing it to jam the lever. I'm a DIY person and I would try to remove the assembly and try to straighten the rubber first. If it's beyond repair, just pull out the whole piece of rubber. The reason for the rubber is to make the shifter look nice and not be able to see the insode mechanism. I'm from Butterworth, Penang and if you PM me, I'm more than willing to help. I'm in Penang on weekends. My no. is *1247*674!

pull out the rubber will do. my sis 03 1.8 same prob. now ok edy. Only once in a while would stuck on P-R but with shift lock everythings fine.

Too bad not that piece of plastic that cover the hole. If it is that piece of plastic, I will be happy because it is cheap to replace. The gear assembly is like this, 1st layer is the plastic that cover the hole, actual part name is call slider I think. 2nd layer is the indicator assembly (the one that illuminate the P,R N,.. when we turn on the headlamp), 3rd layer is another "slider" and finally 4th layer, the whole gear shift assembly. All the 1st 3 later is orderable and not too expensive. For the 4th layer, the plastic on the top of the assembly is broken. It is the same shape and cut out as the zig zag shape that we see on the chrome plate. In fact this is also a major problem in Thailand that's what I heard from my friend. There are 2 part numbers for this gear shift assembly, 1st part number was use from year 2000 to 2004, I suspect it was Japan part. Year 2004 onward has a different part number and I think it is from Thailand. Check with few of my friend driving older Altis, they said no problem. Most problem are for 2004 and up.

i guess my '05 altis is starting to give me the same problem as you guys mentioned here. There are several times that I failed to engaged from N-D. After I push it back to P, and then re-engage to D, it will be ok. Feeling strange at first. But by seeing you all discussed the same problem here, I know it's common.

Hope can find a cheaper way to rectify it.

Your car was from year '05, I guess it is highly possible that you are having the same problem as mine. But if you are lucky and only the slider is broken, then it will only cost you around RM100 (I'm not sure) But if it is the shift lever assembly!! this is part is damn expensive. I think it cost around RM3.6K. However this part is just act as a cushion for the gear lever per my understanding. You can opt for not to install it, but the gear shift will not be as smooth as before.

I need your help here. If one day you discover that the plastic on the gear shift assembly is broken and you ask Toyota SC or any machanic to remove it. Please keep the broken plastic in every single pieces. Send it to me, I will create the mechanical drawing and ask my company vendor to mold the shape out. I guess it will cost us <RM500 (or may be much less than that) then it will solve our problem in much cheaper way. PM me if you have the plastic.

Are you sure that it will be cheaper? Even if you have the falt pattern drawing, it will be costly to mould it as a custom-made palstic mould is costly....unless it is sponsored, otherwise buying off the shelf will be cheaper. My 2 bahts worth smile_clown.gif

Honostly I'm not too sure. Buying off the shelf will definitely cost 3.6K for the part. Molding may be more expensive, because it involve some tooling. My friend said machining part will be much cheaper with 3D drawing provided to the vendor. There are people in Thailand also doing the same, so I bet it is definitely cheaper than buying new.

Hi I had the same issue, removed the layer beneath the shift cover because it disintegrated and Toyota had no such part for replacement unless you change the whole part as a whole. Anyone knows anywhere else selling that piece? After removing shifting from P to R seems rough like one of the posts above
